10 charming places to visit in the province of Alicante



1. Caves of Canelobre (Busot Waters)

These caves They are located 24 kilometers from Alicante and 700 meters above sea level in the Skirts of Cabeçó D´Or. The impressive caves are home to one of the highest vaults in Spain and in them you can see the different forms that the stone has taken. Due to their size and their acoustic and environmental conditions, they usually host musical shows.

How to get

You have to go from Alicante or Xixona to Busot and from there go to Canelobre Caves. Before a curve that makes a sharp turn to the right, near Las Cuevas, there is a parking lot, with vertical signs, where we start the excursion, it is Pla de la Graya.

2. Guadalest

Guadalest is a municipality in the interior of the Alicante province located in the Guadalest Valley and with a very special charm. You cannot miss its reservoir, surrounded by a beautiful landscape and endowed with unique views or the castle of san jose, nestled on a rock for the most part. You can stroll through its streets, full of shops, artisan markets and small bars and go up to the viewpoint to contemplate its impressive views.

How to get

To get there from Benidorm, you must take the CV-70 road in La Nucía or Polop, or the CV-755 in Altea.

3. Barranco de la Encantada (Agres)

Few excursions gather in such a short journey as many charms as this excursion around Planes, in the Gallinera Valley, known as the valley of the cherry trees. We don’t actually do one excursion but four in one. First of all, the Via Crucis that takes us from the town to the Ermita del Santo Cristo, where we can enjoy a walk through the fields of cherry and almond trees. We will walk the path of Barranco de la Encantada with its waterfall and the path that slides over its narrow channel, and finally, the path through the fields that returns us to Planes, a municipality that is also worth visiting.

How to get

To get to the old town of Planes, where the excursion begins, take the CV 700, from Muro de Alcoy, or from Pego.

4. Source of the Vinalopó River (Banyeres de Mariola)

This municipality has the particularity of being the one that is found at the highest altitude in the province. In the vicinity of the town, the Sierra de Mariola is an environmental enclave of great importance, housing several sources that give rise to the Vinalopó river.

How to get

From Banyeres de Mariola you must take the CV-795 road that connects Alcoy with Banyeres until you reach the Interpretation Center of the Sierra Mariola Natural Park which is located in the Masía “Ulls de Canals” next to which there is a public park where you can leave your car.

5. Natural Park of the Torrevieja and La Mata lagoons

The Torrevieja lagoon, of 1,400 hectares, it is the one with the largest extension. La Mata, located a kilometer and a half northwest of the previous one, has an area of ​​700 hectares. The lagoons are separated by the Chaparral and are connected by an artificial canal known as the Acequión, which was built for the exploitation of the Torrevieja salt flats.

The stars of this place that are worth observing are the flamenco and the black-necked grebe.

How to get

On the N-332 road, take the detour at the height of the town of Torrelamata.

6. Fuentes del Algar (Callosa d’en Sarrià)

The Algar Fountains, located just 15 km from Benidorm and 3 km from the urban center of Callosa d’En Sarrià, they constitute a natural area with great ecological wealth, and are declared Protected Wet Area. They have a 1.5 km long circuit along the Algar riverbed to see the landscape, the waterfalls, the springs that flow from the rock or the natural pools, a place where water takes care of the body and the soul.

How to get

We have to go to Callosa d’En Sarriá on the CV-755. Then we head towards Bolulla and Tárbena on the CV-715, but soon we will see the detour signposted to Fuentes del Algar. In any of its car parks we leave the car, in which we will be charged unless we choose to eat at any of the restaurants in the area.

7. Orihuela

The city of Orihuela is home to jewels of historic Mediterranean architecture and has a great variety of museums and palaces of enormous beauty. Orihuela has numerous places and buildings classified as Goods of Cultural Interest (BIC) as The Palmeral, the Circo Theater, the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art or the Miguel Hernández House Museum, who was born in this beautiful municipality.

The castle can also be visited and in it large sections of its walls are preserved, such as remains of the keep and some defensive towers, rafts and dungeons, in addition to the area of ​​the bathroom of the queen.

8. Barrio de Santa Cruz (Alicante)

This area is the most typical of Alicante. Walking its small streets on foot is a delight. Colorful houses, many flowers and steep streets and with many stairs is what we can find during the walk, which will also offer us beautiful views of the city. 9. Salinas de Santa Pola Natural Park

This place has 2,470 hectares and in it we can find salt farms, ponds with fresh water, an area of ​​beaches and dunes, and farmland. This enclave is also declared as ´Area of ​​Special Importance for Birds´. In the park there is also the Salt Museum, located in an old salt mill. The visitor will be able to tour the museum and also learn about the uses of salt, its characteristics, its history and its consumption.

10. La Font Roja

We cannot single out a single point to visit in the Font Roja because all its surroundings are incomparable. The sanctuary, the forest with its specimens of holm oak, ash, maple and oak, the cave gelada, the viewpoints and its views or the snow wells.

How to get

To access the Font Roja sanctuary we must start from Alcoy. When you exit towards Alicante along the N-340, the AP 2001 road turns to the right, which, in 11 km, leads us to the sanctuary car parks, where you can leave your car.
