12,000 free subscriptions for Media Distancia trains in the first month of bonus



Trips on MD trains in Extremadura have doubled compared to the month of September of the previous year

Renfe has issued 12,298 free subscriptions to travel on Extremadura Media Distancia trains during the first month of operation of the Government measure aimed at recurrent users to travel for free until December 31.

Almost 100,000 trips (99,433) have been made on the Extremadura Media Distancia trains, which means doubling the number of trips (increase of 124%) registered during the same month of 2021, according to the company in a press release.

On a national level, Renfe reaches 1.5 million free Suburban, Rodalies and Media Distancia subscriptions this Monday since they were made available to citizens on August 24.

Of the total number of free tickets issued, 71.7% corresponds to subscriptions to travel in the different Cercanías, Rodalies and Cercanías Wide Métrico hubs, while 28.3% corresponds to Medium Distance subscriptions.

In addition to free passes for regular travellers, Renfe has sold nearly 27,000 tickets with 50% Avant discounts to use on high-speed medium-distance services until January 31, 2023.

Good reception of recurring travelers

In Catalonia, 11.5% of the active population has purchased free Rodalies or MD season tickets. In other words, 448,783 Catalans, out of a total of 3,881,500 active population, have their multi-trip pass. In Madrid, 9.8% of the active population have acquired free Cercanías or MD passes, since a total of 353,148 Madrilenians (out of a total figure of 3,597,300 active population) have the pass.

In Cercanías alone, 1,044,771 season tickets have been issued, of which 35.9% (374,663) correspond to Rodalies and 27.5% (287,826) to Cercanías Madrid. The rest corresponds to the other Cercanías nuclei (33.3%), with Comunidad Valenciana (115,500 subscriptions) and Andalucía (122,700), leading the sale of subscriptions after Catalonia and Madrid. In the case of Cercanías Wide Metric (3.3%), Cantabria is the one with the most free subscriptions (17,700), followed by Asturias (8,200) and the Basque Country (6,750).

In Madrid the number of Cercanías users has grown by 20.2% compared to 2021 and in Barcelona by 23.5%. In centers such as Malaga, Bilbao or Cádiz, the increase compared to last year is around 50%. In Asturias or Santander, growth exceeds 65%. The average increase in the entire national territory compared to 2021 is 24%, registering 29 million trips compared to 23.4 million last year.

Medium distance, almost a third of subscriptions

For their part, Medium Distance travelers purchased 412,776 season tickets, which represents 28.3% of the total number of free season tickets sold.

The increase in MD is even greater than Cercanías compared to 2021, registering nearly 2 million users, 572,000 more than in the previous year, 40.7% more, and 82,000 more than in 2019 (+4.3% ).

Travelers from Andalusia are the ones who have withdrawn the most free MD subscriptions, with 82,408, followed by Catalonia (74,120), Madrid (65,322), Galicia (46,125) and Castilla y León (42,127).

As for the Avant passes (High Speed ​​Medium Distance) subsidized at 50%, a total of 26,622 have been issued. The corridor registering the most subscriptions of this type is Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid, with 6,937 (26.1% of the total), followed by Madrid-Ciudad Real-Puertollano (4,231, 15.9%) and Madrid-Toledo ( 3,980, 15%).

75 million trips

According to estimates made, this measure, taken by the Government to mitigate the effects of the crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and promote the use of public transport, reducing energy dependence and emissions, will benefit more than 75 million displacements.

This aid, approved by the Government on August 1 and launched on September 1, will save 118 million liters of gasoline and avoid the emission of 360,576 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, if the transport had been carried out by car .

To access the free Renfe Cercanías and Media Distancia subscriptions, you must be registered, because they are personal and non-transferable. To speed up the process, it is convenient to do it through Renfe’s mobile applications or web pages.

Travelers who have not registered through the Renfe website or apps can purchase the ticket at the sales offices or self-service machines at Renfe stations, presenting their NIF, NIE or passport.

Although subscriptions are free, you must deposit a deposit of 10 euros in the case of Cercanías, and 20 euros for Media Distancia. This deposit will be returned at the end of the season ticket use period if the condition of having made at least 16 journeys in the four months of validity is met.

It is recommended to pay the deposit by card, because in this way the refund of the deposit will be made automatically.
