As far as word games go, it seems deceptively simple, but getting the right answer in Word can sometimes be tricky.
Newsweek offers some handy hints to solve Saturday’s version of the daily puzzle which is available from New York Times and is played by tens of millions of people worldwide.
You get six attempts at the five-letter word. If you get a correct letter in the right place, it turns green. If the letter is in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. A wrong letter turns gray.
Each attempt should bring you closer to the answer as you rack your brains for every vowel and consonant combination you can muster.
At the end of the game, your playing record will show up which includes the number of correct answers identified and the length of your winning streak.
Engineer Josh Wardle created the game as a means to pass the time with his partner Palak Shah. The COVID-19 lockdown focused minds and Shah reviewed the English language’s 12,000 five-letter words, narrowing them down to 2,500 that could be used in the puzzle.
Punning on Wardle’s name, the game’s global reach was assured when the Times bought the puzzle. It has inspired several other daily word games ending in “-dle”, in homage to the original, such as Heardle and Crosswordle.
The Statista graph below shows how Wordle’s popularity has soared among puzzle fans around the world.
One fan of the game, PR professional Jo Jessop-Maloney, previously told Newsweek that the first attempt is crucial to how the rest of the puzzle will go. She said that she would often use the words “Noise” or “Piano” as the starter word because “they often get you off to a flying start.”
