49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s good looks are part of the reason for disrespect in the NFL, says GM John Lynch

Over the past year, 49ers general manager John Lynch has seemed to push starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo past the proverbial door, given his decision to draft Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft. 2021 and a controversial tweet that he liked to “leave Jimmy” behind after the team’s loss to the Titans on December 23.

But on Friday, Lynch said in appearance with 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” in San Francisco who doesn’t understand why Garoppolo doesn’t get more respect around the league.

“Sometimes people are jealous when you’re handsome and have the world for you-know-what.” Lynch joked. “We’ll say, ‘Man, this guy is too perfect.’ I don’t know what the reason is. If people knew him, he’s as easy to like a guy as you’ll ever find.”

The 49ers’ offensive scheme and commitment to handling the ball may not be optimal for Garoppolo’s skill set.

This season, however, in 15 games, Garoppolo has led San Francisco to a 9-6 record, throwing for 3,810 passing yards and 20 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

He helped lead San Francisco to a playoff berth for the second time in the last three seasons, playing this Sunday against the third-seeded Dallas Cowboys. Earlier this week, however, Garoppolo I speak about how the decision to draft Lance and the status of his future contract (he will become an unrestricted free agent in 2023) hung over him.

“It is always in the back of your mind”, Garoppolo saying. “He’s been in mine, you know, really this whole season. I just knew what kind of season it was, I knew everything that was going on behind the scenes and all that. So it was a little different. But, at the same time, it’s like you’re saying that you have to follow that line because you don’t want to get too emotional in those moments. And you just have to go play football when it comes down to it, but the human side definitely comes into play.”

It’s unclear if Lynch stopped to consider why the trade to draft a quarterback with the third overall pick and liking a tweet criticizing Jimmy G might be why the quarterback 49ers field doesn’t get more respect in the league.

Still, Lynch praised Garoppolo’s poise, saying that after his tweet controversy he called Garoppolo. However, the quarterback easily forgave him, apparently saying that he “knew his heart”.

Garoppolo’s career in San Francisco could well be over if the 49ers don’t win the Super Bowl this season. He is due a base salary of $24.2 million next season, though there is more pressure on Lance to play given his arm strength and athleticism.

For now, though, Lynch’s support for Garoppolo remains strong.

“It’s so easy to love him,” Lynch said. “When we got it, that was what we always talked about. He’s not your typical quarterback. You find him all the time sitting with, well, we used to sit before COVID, other people. He always sat with the offensive linemen on the practice squad. Although he isn’t, the quarterback is never just one of the guys in the building, he’s really just one of the guys. I think those are the values of the Midwest and the way he was raised.”
