A journalist is shot dead in Chilpancingo, southern Mexico

Mexican journalist and current columnist Fredid Román was executed this Monday afternoon in Chilpancingo, the capital of the southern state of Guerrero. In addition, the authorities confirmed that an investigation was opened for the crime of “homicide by firearm, against those who are responsible, to the detriment of Fredid ‘N’.”

Fredid Román Román currently wrote the column La Realidad Escrito with circulation in local media. Previously he was the founder of the defunct printed newspaper La Realidad; he also directed Popular Expression and collaborated in various media outlets in the capital of Guerrero.

Until now The motive for the murder is unknown and there is no official version about. The Club de Periodistas de Guerrero association stated in a letter that, although his colleague did not touch on issues of violence, in recent days went to the FGE to demand justice for the murder of one of his relatives nearby recorded in the town of Ocotito, in the same municipality.

With the murder of Fredid Román, there are 16 journalists murdered in Guerrero since 2000; and he is the second assassinated in the current state government. Recently, the deputy representative in Mexico of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) warned that “the number of murders of journalists registered in Mexico is cause for concern.” According to figures from the organization Article 19, since 2000 at least 154 communicators have been murdered in Mexico possibly related to his journalistic work. In the current administration of President López Obrador, since December 2018, around 2,000 attacks against the press in the country, including 40 murders, 15 so far this year.
