A Nicaraguan police officer shoots down an armed suspect after a chase

A police officer shot and killed an allegedly armed man after giving chase in a rural community in the department of Río San Juan de Nicaragua, bordering Costa Rica, the National Police reported Wednesday.

According to the police version, at the end of Tuesday afternoon, in the Los Chiles community, municipality of San Carlos, Río San Juan, a patrol of Police Tactics and Weapons for Intervention and Rescue (Tapir) of the Directorate of Special Police Operations ( Doep) carried out search and capture tasks for those responsible for killing an officer and a civilian during an assault last Saturday. “The police patrol gave chase to two suspicious individuals who were each on his motorcycle; one of the subjects drew the firearm he was carrying, and faced with the imminent danger of his life, a member of the patrol fired with his regulation weapon hitting the subject who died at the scene”, indicated the National Police in an informative note. That institution identified the victim as Gexson Leonel Escorcia Moreno and described him as a “criminal”. The deceased was seized a ” weapon with ammunition and a plastic bag containing 116.4 grams of crack stone (cocaine residue),” he specified.

Freddy Antonio Torres Amador, who accompanied the victim and was also described as a “delinquent” by the National Police, was arrested at the scene. Torres Amador will be referred to the competent authorities, announced the Police, who did not specify what crimes they would accuse him of.

The assault perpetrated by unknown persons occurred when a police patrol was guarding a vehicle belonging to a cocoa exporting company that was transporting personnel with the workers’ payroll, as part of the security program in the field, according to the information. The company vehicle in which the police were traveling was ambushed by the group of unknown armed men, at least 10, according to witnesses. The murdered agent was identified as Aracely Marisol Díaz Salinas, 21, who had entered the police academy at the end of 2021, and Pedro Pablo Chavarría Rivas, 56, an administrative worker at the Agro Industrial Del Río company.

The Police have reported that, in coordination with the Nicaraguan Army, they continue to search for and capture the suspects.
