Absenteeism from work: Extremadurans are the least absent from work in all of Spain


Extremadura also registers the lowest incidence of occupational accidents

Extremadura ended 2021 with an absenteeism rate of 6.1%, the lowest in the country (-0.4 percentage points year-on-year), according to the Adecco study of the last quarter regarding absenteeism and accidents. At the other extreme are Asturias (7.8%), which has the highest absenteeism rate in Spain, despite its year-on-year reduction of 0.5 percentage points. It is closely followed by Navarra, with a rate of 7.6% (+0.4 percentage points). This report has been made public on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

By sector, Industry in Extremadura has an absenteeism rate of 5.9%, the second lowest rate for this sector in the Autonomous Community (-1.1 percentage points year-on-year, the third largest reduction among the Autonomous Communities as a whole). In construction, its rate stands at 4.4%, also the second lowest in the country (-1 percentage points, the second largest regional contraction), and in Services, its absenteeism rate stands at 6.3% (- 0.1 percentage points).

The national absenteeism rate for the fourth quarter of 2021 was 6.6%. This figure has not changed with respect to the previous quarter of 2021, but it has decreased 0.3 percentage points with respect to the same period of the previous year. As for absenteeism due to Temporary Disability (the most important), the rate is 4.9%, a figure that has not changed with respect to the previous quarter and that has fallen 0.4 percentage points with respect to the previous year.

Although there is no unanimous definition of absenteeism, it is understood as the absence of a person from their job, during hours that correspond to a working day, within the legal working day.

Accident rate

In terms of occupational accidents, Extremadura recorded the lowest incidence of all the autonomies, despite the year-on-year increase of 9%. In the region, the incidence during working hours is 209 accidents per 100,000 inhabitants (-1% year-on-year) and 16 while commuting.

The incidence in Spain stands at 222 accidents per 100,000 inhabitants during work hours (+4% year-on-year) and 35 for commuting (+20%).

Regarding the severity of the accidents, it is observed that more than 99% are of a minor nature during the working day (130,928 accidents), a figure that is almost equaled in itinere with 98.6% (20,476 accidents). Fatal accidents in itinere go from 27 (fourth quarter of 2020) to 33 (fourth quarter of 2021), which represents a year-on-year increase of 22%.

The youngest (16-19 years old, followed by the 20-25 and 26-29 age groups) have the highest incidence of accidents for both types of working hours (both men and women).

The highest number of accidents occurs between 40 and 44 years old (men) and between 45 and 49 (women) during working hours, and between 40 and 44 years old while commuting (for both sexes).

The most affected autonomous communities are the Balearic Islands, La Rioja and Castilla-La Mancha. Putting the focus on the incidence of itinere accidents, the most affected are Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

Regarding the incidence of accidents due to covid-19, the rate is one for every 100,000 people in Extremadura, the lowest along with that of the Canary Islands and the region of Murcia. In Spain it is 6 per 100,000 people, which is why a reduction of 64% has been achieved compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

The regions with the highest incidence of accidents with sick leave due to covid-19 are Cantabria and La Rioja.
