AC Milan vs. Napoli time, TV, transmission, line-ups, betting odds for Serie A, matchday 18

For most of the current Serie A season, it looked like the Serie A title in Italy would come down to AC Milan or Napoli. But after losing points in recent weeks, both are now catching up behind leader Inter Milan. A head-to-head win on Sunday is critical to maintaining the chase.

AC Milan host Napoli in distress with the two teams just three points apart near the top of the table. Given Inter’s current form, we could look back on this game as a title elimination contest. A tie wouldn’t do much good either.

Milan (2nd, 39 points) seem to have turned things around after a couple of losses in November, although a disappointing draw against 14th-ranked Udinese last time out complicated their bid for the title. Still, the Rossoneri sit just four points behind leader Inter and would move closer to one point with a win.

Napoli (4th, 36 points), meanwhile, will see their title hopes hanging by a thread with seven points separating them from Inter Milan. Partenopei’s scudetto dreams are already shaken thanks to three straight games without victories, and the failure to add all three points at San Siro could start to put a result in the top four and the Champions League qualification at risk.

Both teams will be looking to show that their early-season blitz wasn’t just a flash in the pan. Each club in this tournament started the league campaign with 12 undefeated, only to stumble at the same time and open the door for Inter. AC Milan have accumulated eight points of the 18 available in their last six games, while Napoli have only five in that same span.

AC Milan vs. Napoli squad news

The home team has some injuries to deal with, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic create a new tone in his training camp Milanello is to blame.

The most notable injury is to center-back Simon Kjaer, who tore his ACL against Genoa in early December and will miss considerable time. Ante Rebic has been injured since mid-October with both ankle and thigh problems, and his return is unclear after only doing individual workouts.

AC Milan forward Olivier Giroud has continued to work on his own as he returns from a muscle problem and is expected to be ready for Napoli in a role from the bench. Three other players, Pietro Pellegri, Rafael Leao and Davide Calabria, were also training on the wing this week and left back Theo Hernández may also retire.

AC Milan predicted the starting line-up (4-2-3-1): Maignan (GK) – Fode Ballo Toure, Romagnoli, Tomori, Kevin Malcuit – Kessie, Tonali – Krunic, Diaz, Saelemaekers – Ibrahimovic

Napoli’s talisman Lorenzo Insigne returned from his brief calf injury the last time in the loss to Empoli, coming off the bench. That match cost the club another Piotr Zielinski injury. The Polish international was withdrawn due to respiratory problems and, although the club announced shortly after the game that it had given the go-ahead, it is possible that Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti will let him rest.

It’s an injury crisis for Napoli. Forward Victor Osimhen is already out and now Lorenzo Insigne will have to skip the game. Defender Kalidou Koulibaly will also be absent at least during the winter break with a thigh injury. That leaves Serie A day laborer Juan Jesús as his replacement. In the two games without Koulibaly, Napoli have conceded four goals, plus the late draw at Sassuolo when the Senegalese international was injured. It will be a great loss.

Napoli’s expected starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Ospina (GK) – Di Lorenzo, Juan Jesus, Rrahmani, Kevin Malcuit – Demme, Anguissa – Elmas, Zielinski, Politano – Mertens

If losing Osimhen to injury wasn’t difficult enough in attack, the loss of Koulibaly, as previously stated, has been devastating for Napoli’s defense, and against AC Milan’s physical attackers like Ibrahimovic, that could make a difference.

Speaking of Zlatan, he has scored four goals in his last four Serie A appearances, and scored a double against Napoli the last time he faced them, a 3-1 win for AC Milan in November 2020. Play in Napoli has been a house of horrors for AC Milan lately, but at home, it shouldn’t be a problem against a visiting team lacking key pieces.
