August for the Royal Family has a clear destination: Mallorca. The Marivent palace has become, since this past weekend, a base of operations for Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and – although they have not been seen for the moment – their daughters, Leonor and Sofía. The Kings have started the month with an agenda full of events that, this year, go beyond the traditional summer pose and that combine leisure and responsibilities, combining a certain institutional representation with their favorite tasks: sport in the case of the King and culture in that of the Queen.
Felipe VI is participating in the regattas of the 39th Copa del Rey de Vela. On Sunday he could be seen embarking from the Palma Nautical Club in the Aifos, the sailboat in which he usually competes and which will be one of the 105 that will be part of the competition, to later dribble with his companions and thus prepare for the tournament. Last year the Cup was not held because of covid-19, but this year, and after subjecting the participants and members of the organization to antigen and PCR tests, the contest will start on Monday to conclude on Saturday, August 7 .
For its part, the appearance of Queen Letizia was also highly anticipated. Her arrival in Mallorca coincides with the first time she is seen after the death of her grandmother, Menchu Álvarez del Valle, on Tuesday, July 27. Letizia and the Asturian announcer were very close, but after the death the queen did not attend the funeral of her father’s mother. During this week she had not appeared in public, until this Sunday, when she could be seen at the closing of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Festival, organized by the Filmin platform and which took place at the La Misericordia Cultural Center in Palma.
At the ceremony, Felipe VI’s wife attended the world premiere of the 1925 French film shot in Mallorca and hitherto lost The political boss and presented the Masters of Cinema Awards, which went to director Stephen Frears and actress Judi Dench. With more than 130 titles behind her, seven times an Oscar nominee, Dench was finally the winner of the statuette in 1999 for her role as precisely a queen, Elizabeth I of England, in the film Shakespeare in love.
“In 1950 it was the first time I was on this island, with which I fell completely in love and with everything that is in it,” Dench said in his speech after collecting the award, EFE collects. “And I never imagined that 70 years later, I would be here. I am deeply overwhelmed, ”confessed the 86-year-old interpreter.
The queen was accompanied by different authorities such as Miquel Iceta, the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta; Francina Armengol, the president of the Balearic Islands, and Jaume Ripoll, director of the festival. Doña Letizia already attended the event in 2019, when she paid tribute to director Ken Loach.
In addition to the daughters of the Kings, who has hardly been seen on the island is Queen Sofía, the mother of Felipe VI. The emerita arrived in Palma about 10 days ago, at the end of July, but for now she has not been seen in public, either alone or with the family. In addition, at the moment there is no date for the usual family pose. This Monday, the King receives the island’s authorities and on Tuesday the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez. The only scheduled family event will take place on Wednesday afternoon, when the four of them will visit the Sierra de Tramuntana interpretation center and the Lluc sanctuary, in Escorca. They will be on the island at least until Sunday, since on Saturday night Felipe VI will deliver the trophies for the Copa del Rey de Vela.
