Akron activists’ plan to meet with mayor and police chief crumbles

A group of community activists expressed frustration that Mayor Dan Horrigan and Police Chief Steve Mylett did not show up for a meeting Thursday evening to discuss conditions in the city following the death of Jayland Walker last month at the hands of police.

The meeting at the Ed Davis Community Center was attended by about two dozen people, including crews from two television stations and the Beacon Journal.

It appears the media were the problem.

John Sharp, chairman of The Coalition for a Safe Community of Akron, said the meeting with the group and the mayor and police chief had been arranged about a week earlier by a US Department of Justice mediator.

But Sharp said the mediator called him Thursday to say that he was not sure whether the Horrigan and Mylett would show up.
