Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has implored the club to agree a deal for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard before the January transfer deadline.

Lingard shone through an excellent six-month loan at West Ham last season, racking up nine goals and four assists in the Premier League, and will have returned to Manchester with a renewed sense of vigor last summer.

But the 29-year-old’s frustrations have continued with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick and he has yet to start a single game in the English top flight this term.

The Red Devils face the possibility of losing Lingard on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the campaign and Newcastle have been exploring a permanent deal for the England international.

However, Lingard would reportedly be in favor of a loan move to St James’ Park given his current situation and the Magpies are running out of time to agree a deal for the attacking midfielder.

Addressing the media earlier this week, United caretaker manager Rangnick said he was aware of Newcastle’s interest but could not confirm whether Lingard would stay or go.

“Regarding Jesse, it’s the same as with a lot of other players,” the German told reporters earlier this week.

“He is a really good player, I see him in every training session. For me it is normal that other clubs, for example, Newcastle are interested in him.

‘I’m not the one dealing with it. I know there may be some interest from other clubs, but if you ask me now what will happen in the next 10 days until the window closes, I can’t answer that question, I’m afraid.

Where Lingard will be when the January transfer window closes remains to be seen, but Shearer made his position on the matter clear with a clear message to Newcastle on Twitter.

Would Jesse Lingard be a good signing for Newcastle United? asked a tweet from Statman Dave, to which Shearer bluntly replied: ‘YES’

Speaking on talkSPORT earlier this month, Jack Wilshere urged Lingard to seriously consider staying at Manchester United as “the grass isn’t always greener”.

“I think after the six months he had last year when he was at West Ham, he probably came back to Manchester United thinking he was going to get a chance and probably deserved it,” the former Arsenal and England midfielder said.

‘That’s probably why he didn’t go away and it will be interesting to see what happens in this window.

“He hasn’t played enough, he probably deserves to play, he’ll feel like he deserves to play with the way they’ve been playing.”

The grass is not always greener. I had this a number of times at Arsenal with players who didn’t really want to be there,” Wilshere added.

“Sometimes you need to sit back and see how lucky you are to be in a big club like that with the fans.

‘Okay, they’re not a challenge, but it’s still a great club.

Teams go there and are intimidated by it. Being on that side of the fence instead of going to those places makes a big difference.’
