The Palau de les Arts de València yesterday hosted the recognition ceremony of the cultural capitals Valencian 2021, among which is Alcoy. The city’s project is called Roots of the Future and will be complemented with Proposals for theater, cinema, dance, musical concerts, opera, promotion of reading and exhibitions by the Valencian Institute of Culture or the Consortium of Museums.
Culture of the Generalitat created the distinction in 2016 with the aim of encouraging the structuring of culture, recognizing the populations that stand out for making a firm commitment to culture as an instrument of social cohesion and economic development. With this recognition, in addition, it seeks to decentralize the cultural offer, improve communications between the Generalitat and cultural agents throughout the Valencian territory and guarantee its universal access.
For the first time, yesterday an official regional ceremony was held by the Generalitat to make visible the importance of cultural capitals. This was chaired by the minister Vicent Marzà, who thanked “the great reprogramming work they have done this year’s Valencian cultural capitals, Altea and Villafranca del Cid, who have demonstrated at all times that with will it is possible and, at the same time, that culture is safe ”.
And it is that until this year the distinction was held from April 25 of one year to the 25 of the same month the following year, but the health crisis caused by covid-19 has caused it to last throughout 2020. In this sense, From now on, the municipalities that hold the recognition will do so during a calendar year, from January to December.
This is the case of Alcoy and Bocairent, which will be Valencian cultural capitals in 2021. Two neighboring municipalities, although the first in the province of Alicante and the second in Valencia, which share an intense industrial history, landscape, festival and heritage.
It is precisely these qualities that the Alcoy City Council has wanted to capture in its Arrels de Futur project, «in which we have explained what we have, what we are doing and what we want to do, cultural promotion and production activities, educational and social resources aimed at culture and social entities ”, explained the mayor of Alcoy, Toni Francés, during his speech.
The future technological and cultural complex of Rodes, the network of municipal libraries, the Ticketalcoi platform, the Moors and Christians, the Nadal Alcoià and the Modernista Fair are some examples that are present in the Alcoy project. “Having obtained this recognition is an honor and a challenge, and we will work firmly to culturally structure our territory and extend everything we have and what we will have to those who want to share with us our history, festivities and culture,” concluded the mayor.
For his part, Marzà stressed that «Alcoy and Bocairent have prepared some excellent projects to which we strongly join from the Generalitat. For this reason, during the coming year we will program more than 30 activities in these municipalities »of theater, cinema, dance, musical concerts, opera, promotion of reading and exhibitions with an approximate budget of 200,000 euros.
Said programming will start from March 2021 and will feature the screening of award-winning films at the Valencian Audiovisual Awards, Valencian short films, historical film material; street theater, such as Reminds’ own production and dance shows such as La mort i la donzella; Valencian music groups, «cant d’estil», the Cor de la Generalitat and exhibitions such as the Collection of Contemporary Art, among other activities.
