Altea receives in FITUR the recognition as an integral destination of tourist quality



During the morning of this Thursday, Altea received recognition as a novel destination of the SICTED (Integral System of Tourist Quality in Destinations) by the Secretary of State for Tourism and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces within the framework of the XIII edition of the SICTED awards that take place at the International Tourism Fair, FITUR, which is being held in Madrid this week.

The Councilor for Tourism, Xelo González, stated that “it is an honor to receive this distinction from SICTED, an organization in which we have just become a part of our policy of making Altea a quality, innovative and sustainable destination”.

The mayor asserted that Altea is still betting “on being a benchmark as a tourist destination. During 2021, important work has been carried out to implement the comprehensive Spanish tourism quality system in destinations, a commitment to the continuous improvement of our tourism offer. And in the Department of Tourism, we worked very hard during the past year to achieve all the standards set by SICTED and other organizations, such as the Smart Tourist Destination certification for municipalities with less than 50,000 inhabitants, a certification that has been granted to us as the first Spanish municipality to receive it”.

Regarding this certification, Xelo González pointed out that on Wednesday the mayor of Altea, Jaume Llinares, participated in the round table on the territorial model of Smart Tourist Destinations that was held during the fair with the participation of the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer.

At the table, “Altea attended as the first DTI municipality with less than 50,000 inhabitants, explaining our commitment to cultural, sports, gastronomic and festive promotions, in addition to showing our great offer of quality, innovation and sustainability in the tourism field that makes us a a benchmark in the sector,” said González.

Excellence and sustainability

The Councilor for Tourism stated that Jaume Llinares “explained at the round table the specific strategy adopted by Altea for its tourism promotion, underlining the importance of working for excellence and sustainability. Objectives that are specified in the Tourism Sustainability Plans that have achieved recognition by the regional and state administrations, and that will allow the investment of 4 million euros in the execution of 22 projects whose common objective is the improvement of quality of life of Alteans and visitors”.

The mayor added that “our mayor defended that reinforcing our tourist destination will allow the improvement of digital intelligence, but also sustainability and mobility in our town”, and explained that Jaume Llinares positively highlighted one of the actions that at the moment are being carried out in Altea: ‘the regeneration of the coastline, which has involved the elimination of a car park on the coastline and the recovery of a beach that had been lost. All this linked to our offer and to the future realization of 22 projects that are beginning to be executed, with which Altea will see a radical change for the better in the quality of life in a period of 2 or 3 years’, according to the mayor during the meeting”.

The promotion of Altea in FITUR

Finally, Xelo González spoke this Thursday about other notable aspects of the municipality that are also being promoted in this edition of the International Tourism Fair, in addition to the DTI. The mayor indicated that “culture, cycling, sailing and nature are other fields that allow Altea to deseasonalise tourism, and for this reason we have brought to FITUR the wide range that we have in these sectors. Offer that goes through an extensive calendar of cultural activities; and have 10 different cycling routes and a hotel establishment specialized in sports tourism linked to cycling and recognized by the Spanish Cycling Federation, three marinas and their different commitments to nautical sports, and the incomparable natural landscapes that Altea has, such as the Sierra Bèrnia, the different rural areas, the Algar river or the Bay of Altea where the Cala del Soio enclave of volcanic origin is located and declared a Natural Monument in 2020 by the Generalitat Valenciana”.

Presentation of the Gastronomic Days

On the other hand, gastronomy is one of the strong points of the tourist promotion of the town of Altea in FITUR. This Thursday the three gastronomic days that take place throughout the year were presented: “El plat de calent” (February 18 to 27), “Spring Horta” (May 6 to 15) and “La cuina de les barques ” (4 to 13 November).

The Councilor for Commerce, Miguel de la Hoz, presented the brochure that his Department has prepared where the three events are joined, also promoting the local gastronomic culture. The mayor indicated that “being able to be at FITUR is having the opportunity to show the quality of our gastronomy on an international level, since there are many attendees who are interested in our municipality, which is why we also promote establishments in the hotel and restaurant sectors. commercial”, because in addition “our hotel fabric and commerce are strong points of our town, main axes of our economy, and that is why they are also promoted in this important fair”, he added.
