AMD strengthens its offensive by launching its best gaming processor: the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 3D V-Cache technology

AMD has not been slow to return to the load after the announcements it made at CES. At the beginning of January, this company revealed some of the features that its future (and promising) Ryzen 7000 processors with Zen 4 microarchitecture will have. But this was not all. He also told us about Ryzen 7 5800X3D in which we will investigate in this article, and which, as we will see, prepares its landing on the market.

And it is that the company led by Lisa Su has not only announced today what price it will have and when its most advanced gaming microprocessor will be available (according to AMD itself); has also presented six new processors for desktop computers that seek to expand their portfolio of solutions in order to reach the widest possible range of users.

Three of these new CPUs, the Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 5 5600, and Ryzen 5 5500, implement the Zen 3 microarchitecture, while the other three, the Ryzen 5 4600G, Ryzen 5 4500, and Ryzen 3 4100, use the Zen 2 microarchitecture. Of course, they all have in common a 65 watt TDP, and the only one that does not incorporate the Wraith Stealth fan that this brand gives us along with some of its chips is the Ryzen 7 5700X. In this table we have collected the specifications of these new processors:

This is how the Ryzen 7 5800X3D spends them (according to AMD)

This is not the same Ryzen 7 5800X processor that we thoroughly reviewed at the end of 2020. Both chips share the Zen 3 microarchitecture and a good part of their specifications, but in the new Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD engineers have introduced an innovation which, according to this company, makes a difference with games.

There is no shortage of chips, there is a huge deficit: we are manufacturing more than ever and it is still not enough

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is being manufactured by TSMC using its 7nm FinFET photolithography, incorporates 8 cores, can process a maximum of 16 threads simultaneously (threads), works with a base clock frequency of 3.4 GHz and has a TDP of 105 watts. Sounds good, but so far there’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

What allows the Ryzen 7 5800X3D to stand out from the other processors in this family is 3D V-Cache technology.

What allows this CPU to stand out from the other processors in this family is 3D V-Cache technology. This innovation has already been used by AMD in some of its professional solutions, such as the EPYC processors for data centers, and, broadly speaking, it makes it possible to stack chiplets, so that instead of being placed one next to the other, are placed one on top of the other. In this way it is possible to significantly increase the capacity of the level 3 cache, and, in addition, its latency is reduced.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor has a level 1 cache with a total capacity of 512 KB, a level 2 cache of 4 MB, and here comes its most spectacular figure, a level 3 cache of no less than 96MB. The Ryzen 7 5800X has ‘only’ 32MB of L3 cache, with the more ambitious Ryzen 9 5950X and Ryzen 9 5900X featuring 64MB of L3 cache.

This improvement, according to AMD, allows the 5800X3D to show a performance increase with games at 1080p up to 15%. It sounds good, but we hope to have the opportunity to analyze this processor to see if it really lives up to the expectations it is generating from the performance data that this brand has given us.

New AMD processors: price and availability

The new Ryzen 7 5800X3D will be available from April 20 with a price of $449 (approximately 408 euros). On the other hand, the other six processors that we have talked about in this article will arrive in stores from next April 4 (in the specifications table that we published above we have included their prices).
