Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not welcome the decision of the Government of President Joe Biden to prioritize the capture of the children of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera and accused that the decision is a form of “intervention” in national affairs of Mexico.

“If they are in national territory, the one to stop them is up to our authority, no foreign force is allowed to act in this matter, nor any other in our territory“, Said the Mexican president in his morning press conference. “We are the ones who have to do our job.”

That was the response to the Biden Administration, after the US president will sign two executive orders to strengthen the fight against organized crime and will integrate in a single list as a priority the children of “El Chapo”, known as “Los Chapitos.”

The State Department (DOS) offered $ 5 million for each of the children of the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and who currently operates in that criminal organization: Ovidio Guzmán López and his brother Joaquín Guzmán López, in addition to the acquaintances Ivan Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar and Jesus Alfredo “Alfredillo” Guzmán Salazar, who were already on the DEA list.

“The Department offers rewards of up to $ 5 million for information leading to the arrest and / or conviction of each of the Mexicans,” the DOS report indicates. “All four are high-ranking members of the Sinaloa Cartel and each is subject to a federal indictment for their involvement in illicit drug trafficking.”

The Mexican president contradicted himself on the “non-persecution of leaders” as a priority in his government, which focuses on confronting organized crime in a different way. Now he says that “everyone is a priority.”

Yes, everyone (will be priority), there is no impunity for anyone and there are not as it was before, two extremes that arose: one, the criminal association between organized crime and the authorities, and the other is that foreign agents were allowed to intervene in operations in our country, “he added.

The position of the Mexican president draws attention after the governments of Mexico and the United States will start the so-called Bicentennial Understanding, which replaces the Merida Initiative against organized crime.

For the Biden Administration, according to the new executive orders, drug cartels, not only Mexican, but also Asian, are a priority, due to the increase in fentanyl trafficking, as well as the increase in overdose deaths in the United States.

On November 17, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revealed an increase in deaths from drug overdoses going from 78,056 to 100,306, which represents a rise of 28 percent.

The 2021 DEA report maintains the Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) cartels as the most powerful in the US., despite the fact that the former lost one of its leaders, “El Chapo” Guzmán, sentenced to life in prison in July 2019 and locked up in the Colorado Supermax.

“These TCOs (Transnational Criminal Organizations) maintain drug distribution cells in cities throughout the United States that report directly to (the cartels),” indicates the DEA. “The Sinaloa Cartel maintains the broadest international presence compared to other Mexican TCOs, which gives the group an additional advantage over its rivals.”
