An 11-year-old Ukrainian boy travels 1,200 kilometers alone to Slovakia

An 11-year-old Ukrainian minor from the town of Zaporizhia, in central Ukraine, has traveled 1,700 kilometers -1,200 of them alone- until meeting with relatives in bratislava.

As reported today by the Slovak Police through their social networks, the little boy was “with only a plastic bag, his passport and a phone number written on his hand.” According to the publication of the security body, the child “arrived completely alone” to Slovakia because his mother had to stay in the Ukraine.

The road to Slovakia

Mother of the child, Júlia Volodymyrivná, a widow with several children, has had to stay in the city of Zaporizhia taking care of the child’s grandmotherwhich is immobilized, as she herself explained in a video published by the police.

That is why Volodymyrivná had to ship his son alone on a train bound for the border with Slovakiaa country that is 1,200 kilometers away.

Near the border, the minor was accompanied to the border crossing by customs officers. It was not until he crossed the border with Slovakia, a country of the European Union, that some volunteers took care of him and tried to contact the boy’s family.

Luckily for everyone, the family of the boy who lives in Bratislava “appeared at the scene to take the boy and everything ended well,” according to one of the volunteers who took care of the minor. To reach the country’s capital, the minor had to travel 500 more kilometers, reaching a total of 1,700 kilometers of travel.

After hearing the news of the arrival, Volodymyrivná explained that she is “very grateful that they saved the life” of her son.

At the end of the video, the mother bursts into tears and asks that other countries take care of Ukrainian children: “Please protect our children and give them a safe place.”
