An exhibition, witness to a tragedy not to be forgotten

Reflecting on the relationship and behavior that we have with the natural environment, as well as raising awareness of the need for its care, are two of the objectives pursued by Francisco Domínguez with ‘Memorias de fuego’. It is a photographic exhibition about the fire that devastated a large part of the municipality of Casas de Miravete in mid-July.

Domínguez, a 66-year-old retired teacher and pedagogue, lives in Leganés (Madrid) and one of his hobbies is photography. He is from Casas de Miravete, with whom he has maintained a strong bond throughout his life and to which he returns whenever he can.

Hence the consternation that caused him to see the state in which the environment had been left, when the authorities allowed the population to return to their homes. «I was following him from my house in Madrid and two days after the people who had evacuated returned, the one who remained in Almaraz, I took the car and I came. When taking the highway exit and seeing how everything was… tears fell from my eyes, and at that very moment I started taking photos”, recalls the author of the exhibition.

And so he took up to 700 snapshots, the result of his walks around the environment, checking the devastation of the fire, especially from Miravete Peak. Up to there he climbed to have a broader perspective of the extent of the damage, including the west face of the mountain range, towards Jaraicejo, which he continued photographing.

«I went on a circular tour, I met people who asked me about the photos…». This is how the exhibition on the fire came about, at the request of the neighbors who were interested in what he was doing.

Then he contacted the person in charge of GeoCentro Monfragüe and the Casas de Miravete City Council to organize the exhibition of photographs, the content of which he has given to the Consistory “so that they can be witnesses of what happened” and can be shown in the library or in the city council itself, among others.

The exhibition, which will remain installed in the Las Escuelas cultural center until the middle of next September, includes 24 snapshots, which are joined by a seven-minute audiovisual, with another 80 photographs.

«To better reflect the catastrophe I made an audiovisual with songs by Miguel Ángel Gómez Naharro and Luis Pastor»

«I saw that 24 photos were not enough to reflect the catastrophe, so I made this audiovisual, with songs by our neighbor Miguel Ángel Gómez Naharro and Luis Pastor», explains the author. Specifically ‘Aldea Pintoresca’, by the former, and ‘Te doy las Villuercas’, by the latter. In total they add up to six minutes, to which Domínguez joins another one with the sound of the local fauna and images of this same place before burning, which he captured with the same objective in the spring.

Those interested can see the audiovisual on the social networks of GeoCentro Monfragüe itself.

Opening

The opening of the exhibition took place on August 13. This event was attended by various local authorities, neighbors and the performance of Miguel Ángel Gómez Naharro.
