The man was treated in Primary Care and has not required hospital care

Extremadura confirms a second case of monkeypox. The result obtained by the laboratories of the Extremadura Health Service has been positive and is now pending confirmation by the National Microbiology Center of the Carlos III Health Institute, in Madrid, in accordance with the protocols established by the Coordinating Center for Alerts and Health Emergencies.

The SES confirms that the person affected by the monkeypox virus has no epidemiological relationship with the first case in the region, which was announced on Tuesday. In this case it is also a young man. Like the first case, he has not required hospital admission. The case was detected in a Primary Care consultation.

As the protocol states, a follow-up is being carried out for the preparation of the corresponding epidemiological study, adds the Board in a press release.

homosexual collective

Monkeypox has unleashed health alarms, especially among the homosexual group, where the vast majority of positives have been detected. The reports from the Ministry of Health published on Friday, once again focus on men who have sex with other men and warn them of a “moderate” risk of contagion, compared to a “very low” one in the rest of the population.

Monkeypox 'learns' to attack

“In the present moment […] the risk of the disease would be limited to those people, men who have sex with men fundamentally, who have relationships in high-risk sexual contexts, ”say the documents, prepared by the technicians of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES) , which warn of the danger of infections at “parties, private gatherings or events”, such as Gay Pride in Maspalomas or the Paraíso sauna in Madrid, the two main sources of the disease in Spain.

close contact

Information on monkeypox collected in recent weeks shows some evidence. Thus, the majority of infections in Spain have been caused by “close contact with infectious material from the skin lesions of an infected person and, also, through respiratory droplets due to prolonged face-to-face contact,” the specialists point out.

Incubation period

The incubation period for the disease is 6 to 16 days, but can range from 5 to 21. The clinical picture of patients includes fever, headache, muscle aches, lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes) and fatigue. And within one to five days after the onset of fever, a rash develops, often starting on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body, primarily the palms, feet, and genital areas. .
