Apple DIY: Will Enable iPhones Repair Kits for Consumers

The self-repair program will launch first in the US and expand to other countries over the next year.

Apple says its customers will soon be able to repair their own cell phones using original parts, tools and guides from the apple company. This will be a sea change for the company that has long protected its hardware and had not allowed users to make changes to it.

The company announced Wednesday that a new self-service repair program, launching in early 2022, will initially be available for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 phones and will focus on common repairs like cracked screens, battery issues, and camera issues. Users will be able to purchase the necessary parts and tools for repairs directly from the company.

The show will launch first in the US and expand to other countries over the next year, according to CBS.

“Creating greater access to Genuine Apple Parts offers our customers even more options if a repair is needed. In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to original Apple parts, tools and training, and we now offer an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs, ”said Jeff Williams, chief operating officer, Manzana.

Groups of people who demanded the right to repair their devices have criticized Apple in the past for its strict control over its hardware and software, and it is that the company went so far as to create proprietary screws for the iPhone a decade ago, making it impossible for consumers to open their devices.

This forced consumers to go to repair centers where they paid excessive prices or had to dispose of electronic devices before their useful lives ended.

In July, President Joe Biden signed an executive order encouraging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to crack down on companies that restrict repairs made by customers. That same month, the FTC unanimously voted to adopt a new policy that gives consumers more rights to repair their devices.

“These types of restrictions can significantly increase costs to consumers, stifle innovation, close business opportunities for independent repair shops, create unnecessary electronic waste, delay timely repairs, and undermine resilience,” said the FTC President. , Lina M. Khan, last July.

Apple customers currently have to repair their products through the company or use an authorized service provider, of which there are more than 5,000.

It should be noted that, in 2019, Apple also launched a standalone repair program that gives 2,800 independent technicians access to parts and tools for repair.

Apple said the new self-repair program is intended for individual technicians with knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices, adding that customers should review the repair manual before ordering parts. Apple said the program will expand in 2022 to also include Mac computers that feature M1 chips.
