The Real Club Astur de Regatas de Gijón with a crew made up of Raquel García Monteagudo, Marta Duran Cardeli, Covadonga Fernandez Diez, Carmen Ayuela Ronzon, Carmen Simal Veira, Marta Suarez Calvo, Raquel García Monteagudo and Elena Quevedo Pasarin; was proclaimed winner of the Isabel Zendal-Gran Premio Concello da Coruña Regatta for female crews, in which ten clubs and institutions competed … within Abanca Week.
For its part, the Real Club Náutico de Vigo with the crew made up of Paula Gonzalez Esteban, Paloma Gonzalez Esteban, Marta Torres Gestal, Estrela Campos Rodriguez and Patricia Saez Borreguero… took second place overall; being bronze for the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo with Paula Da Rocha Iglesias, Sofia Martinez-Almeida Cuiña, Clara Vaquerizo Rey-Stolle, Irene Maria Martinez-Almeida Cuiña and Paloma Martinez De La Riva Baspino.
Spectacular closing day in the La Coruña estuary, with winds of 12 knots from the south component that facilitated the task of the judges, who were able to complete the five planned heats quickly and without problems, of which the girls from Gijón and from Vigo achieved two victories … while the fifth was for the Pontevedra from Sanxenxo.
In the total count, Astur de Regatas de Gijón (meeting the four races on Saturday and five on Sunday), totaled 14 points (4 first, 2 seconds and 2 third … discarding a fourth), while Náutico de Vigo had a point plus 15 (4 firsts, 2 seconds, a third and a fourth… discarding a fourth)… so the Asturian women beat the Galicians by only one point difference !, which gives an idea of the tremendous equality of the competition between the first two.
The same happened in the fight for the bronze, as the Náutico de Sanxenxo reached 17 points (3 first, 3 seconds and 2 quarters … discarding a quarter) and finally the Náutico de La Coruña that added one more, 18 products of (2 first, 2 seconds and 4 third … neglecting a fourth).
In summary, a very positive experience in a women’s crew competition with the Isabel Zendal Regatta, in which the predominant note was equality, with victory for the Gijón club, followed by Vigo, Sanxenxo and La Coruña… Galician Universities completing the table , the Naval Military School of Marín, the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, the Real Club Marítimo of the Abra-Real Sporting Club of Getxo, the Vertigo Sailing of Vigo and the British University Sussex.
At five o’clock in the afternoon the awards ceremony was held, which was attended by the head of sports of the Concello da Coruña, Mónica Martínez, president and Comodoro del Náutico de La Coruña, Fernando Fernández from the Zendal Association, Jorge Senin de Abanca … And others among which two descendants of Isabel Zendal stood out: Teresa Cendal and Isabel Cendal (the surname has varied in these two centuries)
