OLED screens have come to laptops determined to stay. The range of options equipped with an organic panel that we users have at our disposal is already quite wide, and, in addition, some of them have very attractive specifications and a reasonable price. East Zenbook 14 Flip OLED that ASUS has just launched is a very interesting specimen both for its figures and for the experience it promises us.
There is no doubt that its most attractive component is its screen OLED HDR NanoEdge 14-inch with 16:10 aspect ratio, but we are not interested in overlooking that in its most ambitious configuration it incorporates an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, 16 GB LPDDR4X at 4266 MHz and a 1 TB SSD with PCIe 4.0 interface NVMe M.2. As you can see, it doesn’t look good but nothing bad, although we are only scratching the surface.

It is very difficult to resist a screen like the one in this convertible
The table that we publish above these lines reflects that the specifications of this laptop are not bad at all, although I miss the fact that it incorporates a 12th generation Intel Core processor with Alder Lake microarchitecture belonging to the U or P series, or one of the new Ryzen 6000 chips with Zen 3+ microarchitecture. Everything else seems consistent to me in a convertible that seeks to keep its thickness and weight under control.
In any case, as I mentioned in the first lines of this article, the most attractive component that this laptop offers us is its 14-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2800 x 1800 points. This organic panel has, as you might expect, a very high contrast ratio (1,000,000:1) and a minimum response time (0.2 ms), two characteristics inherent to OLED technology. But its strengths do not end here.
And it is that, according to ASUS, its maximum brightness delivery capacity is 550 nits, a figure that a priori may not seem very high, but that is not bad at all if we keep in mind that it is linked to an OLED panel that establishes very deep blacks as a frame of reference. On the other hand, the refresh rate at which this screen works is 90 Hz, so it should be able to resolve the movement of fast-moving objects accurately.
According to ASUS, it is capable of covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, which makes it an interesting option for content creation.
However, one of the most interesting qualities of this OLED panel is its colorimetry. At least it is on paper and if we stick to the information that ASUS gives us. And it is that, according to this brand, it is capable of covering 100% DCI-P3 color space, which makes it an interesting option for content creation. Of course, we are interested in keeping in mind that its power will probably not allow it to face the most demanding content creation scenarios with the maximum guarantees.
Its connectivity and portability play in its favor
ASUS has solved the connectivity of this laptop in a quite satisfactory way. And it incorporates two Thunderbolt 4 ports to which it is possible to connect an external screen, and which are also capable of supplying electrical power; a 2nd generation USB 3.2 port and, finally, the relevant HDMI output (implements the 2.0b standard), as well as a combined connector in format Jack 3.5mm and a micro-SD card reader.
As far as wireless connectivity is concerned, this convertible offers us Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 (it is a pity that it does not offer us Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2). And its physical characteristics, among which it is worth looking at its 15.9 mm thickness and 1.4 kg, favor its portability. Now we just have to cross our fingers for the opportunity to test it thoroughly. In this way we can confirm if it really lives up to the expectations it has generated.
ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED: price and availability
This laptop is now available with a starting price of €1,599 with the configuration that incorporates an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor.
