At least 150 people died in episodes of gun violence in more than 400 shootings in the United States this past weekend, in which the country celebrated the 4th of July, Independence Day.

According to data extracted by the CNN chain from the Gun Violence Archive, a website that compiles actions of armed aggressions in each city of the country, these events are framed in a climate of increased violence which some of the main North American cities have faced in recent months.

The media warns, however, that this statistic, which includes shooting incidents and victims of armed violence nationwide during a 72-hour period from Friday to Sunday, must still be updated, so the number of affected could be higher.

In New York, where gun violence has risen to levels not seen in years in recent months, there were 26 fatalities in 21 shootings between Friday and Sunday.

This is, however, a decrease from the same period last year, when 30 people were shot in 25 shootings, according to the New York police.

Just on July 4, the city experienced 12 incidents with shots involving 13 victims, an increase from last year, when there were eight shootings and eight victims, according to sources.

So far this year, incidents of gun violence in New York have skyrocketed almost 40% if compared to the same period in 2020, with 767 shootings and 885 victims.

In Chicago, another of the largest cities in the country, 83 people were shot, of which 14 died, in this festive period. It so happens that among the deceased there was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard.

The chain points out, however, that unlike other cities that experience an increase in violent crime, the homicide rate in Chicago until June is 2% lower than in the same period of 2020. However, the number of global victims it is still 14% higher.

The reason for the fall was a less violent June, in which Chicago saw a 20% drop in homicides compared to last year (78 instead of 98), a 13% drop in shootings (363 vs. 416) and an 8% decrease in shooting victims (499 vs. 540).

There were also several mass shootings over the holiday weekend, incidents defined as those that leave four or more people dead or wounded by gunshots, excluding the assailant.

Among the victims are minors

Among them, eight people were injured early Sunday in a shooting near a car wash in Fort Worth (Texas), after a discussion among a group of men, according to a press release from the local police.

In Norfolk, Virginia, four children were shot and wounded on Friday afternoon, including a 6 year old girl He was initially reported to suffer life-threatening injuries, although he is currently in stable condition, according to the police in that city.

The victims also included a 14-year-old adolescent, a 16-year-old adolescent and a young man of the same age. Everyone is expected to make a full recovery. Norfolk police said detectives detained a 15-year-old teenager accused of being related to the shooting, according to the network.
