On the occasion of centenary of the mythical Spa circuit, the customer careers department of Audi Sport will compete with four cars with special decorations in the 24 Hours of Spa, which are held on the popular Belgian track from July 29 to August 1.
In the words of Cris Reinke, Head of the Audi Sport customer racing department: “It is an honor for us to congratulate this spectacular track on its anniversary in competition. It is the first time we have done this with four cars designed for the occasion. All of them incorporate references to Belgium and the country’s artistic and design traditions. ” One of the common elements in all four vehicles is the number 100, which is superimposed on the red Audi Sport diamond on the roof of the vehicle to nod to the centenary of Spa.
The team Audi Sport Team Attempto, which finished just 4.6 seconds from victory last year, is competing this year in the R8 LMS number 66 and the Belgian colors (black, yellow and red). The vehicle will be piloted by Mattia Drudi, Dennis Marschall and Christopher Mies.
On the other hand, the exterior design of the team’s vehicle Audi Sport Team Saintéloc, with the number 25, has geometric shapes. The 2017 selling team car, to be driven this year by Christopher Haase, Patric Niederhauser and Markus Winkelhock, embraces the abstract painter’s ideas. Victor Servranckx, a very recognized artist in the country in the first half of the 20th century. The vehicle features patterns in red, yellow, green and blue, and the Spa Circuit logo on the doors of the R8 LMS complete the look perfectly.
The Audi Sport Team WRT, winner of the 24 Hours race in 2011 and 2014, lines up two vehicles with an even more expressive theme. The GT3 by Kelvin van der Linde, Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts represents the era of “Art Nouveau”. The design of the R8 LMS number 32 has elements of the fashion of the time, which has its origin in textile centers such as Antwerp, in Belgium. Audi Sport has combined this design with lines that refer to Spa’s own layout.
For its part, the second car of the Audi Sport Team WRT, driven by Robin Frijns, Dennis Lind and Nico Müller, has a series of red and yellow lines that reflect the drawing style of the comics. The vehicle with the number 37 is inspired by figures such as Tintin, Gaston or the popular racing driver Michel Baillant, since they were the protagonists of Belgian comics of various world-known styles.
A total of 60 cars from nine different manufacturers They will compete in the largest GT3 race in the world. Audi was first represented by private teams at Spa in 2009 and 2010, and since 2011 the Audi Sport customer competition department supports the program. The brand with the four rings will fight for its fifth victory, after winning in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2017. It should be noted that no other manufacturer has achieved so many successes in this period.
This year the race is again scoring for two championships, since it is the first date of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, which is disputed on three continents (Europe, America and Africa); and it is also the third of the five tests of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS Endurance Cup.
