Autonomy or fast charging: we want it all and that cannot be

Like Yin and Yang, autonomy and fast charging are condemned to coexist in a delicate balance in which, either you choose a smartphone with a slim design with a fair battery and fast charging, or you carry a brick with autonomy for the whole day but with a “heap” load.

Real Madrid or Athletic, Colacao or Nesquik, Coca-Cola or Pepsi? There comes a time in life when we must position ourselves in one or another option and they are not worth lukewarm or half measures.

In telephony, beyond any brand or model, one of these transcendental decisions is to choose a smartphone that has the right balance so that it does not mount an excessively bulky battery, but that, in return, offers a fast charge of infarction, or a mobile with a little more battery capacity but let it take its time to load.

Yes, I know that the ideal is to have it all. I too would have liked to have the poise and charisma of Ryan Reynolds but all the suits are too narrow in the waist and sleeve lengths. We want it all and that, with current battery technology, cannot be.

There are people who, knowing that mobile phones of all kinds pass through my hands, ask me which mobile is better. Me, while trying to get away with a “lady, let go of my arm”, I answer that it depends on their usage habits. Joking apart, there is no universal answer to this question.

Personally, and we have commented on it many times in the 2.0 podcast of ComputerHoy.com on Mondays, due to my usage profile, Some time ago I took a position in favor of carrying a light and manageable mobile in my pocket with which most of the days came to the end of the day with some battery, but if necessary, you can use a 65W, 80W and even 120W fast charging.

In fact, most of the high-end mobiles are betting on this variant and among manufacturers a race has begun to get the fastest charge for their mobiles, while those of the mid-range and entry-level opt for the opposite path with inexhaustible batteries after two days of use.

Some, like realme, have already announced the arrival of charging powers of up to 150 W in the next generation of mobiles. A hug to the users of Samsung and Apple who are still in the 25 W. You are the resistance.

Right now I am testing the Redmi Note 11 Pro+advanced brother of the Redmi Note 11 that we already analyzed a few weeks ago and, in advance of the review that we will publish in a few days, I can tell you that one of its strengths is its fast charge of 120 W.

Not satisfied with that Xiaomi has included a 120 W charger inside the box that allows you to take advantage of it without additional expenses (except for the cost of electricity consumed, which is already a peak with the rise in prices) or pseudo-ecological excuses.

Can charge the mobile battery in half an hour It has changed my attitude towards battery life. I no longer break out in cold sweats when I approach 20% of its capacity because, again, due to my usual usage profile, I prefer to carry a small and stylish smartphone in my pocket, to a brick.

That yes, for it you have to be willing to carry a charger in your backpack in case you need it. Luckily, these chargers are quite compact and can be used to charge your mobile, such as the latest iPad Air 5 that I have been testing, or one of the best Dell laptops for work on the go. In the end, you even save space.

At the opposite extreme, there is that user profile that leaves home in the morning and probably you won’t have a plug nearby all day. In that case, there is no other alternative than to opt for a mobile phone with a battery that guarantees a whole day of use, even if it means having to leave the mobile phone charging for several hours.

In this case, you must be careful not to be left alone with the data from the mobile data sheet, all that glitters is not gold. 4,500 mAh of battery in a smartphone with well-optimized hardware and software can offer more hours of use than a 5,000 mAh make it a disaster in energy management.

In that case, let yourself be advised by those who have really tried it and can offer you an opinion based on their own experience.

In the process of testing ComputerHoy.com we use each mobile we test as a main smartphone for at least a week putting ourselves in the user’s shoes (in my case only in size 41 shoes) with real use of the smartphone.

This is the only way to detect energy leaks like the one my colleague Alejandro found in the analysis of the Xiaomi 12 Pro, completely blurring the 120 W of its fast charge.

And you, you are more of a fast charge or an inexhaustible battery? No answer is wrong, although deep down what we want is to have both on the same mobile. Unfortunately, due to the physics of the materials used in the manufacture of batteries, both options are like water and oil or Yin and Yang.
