Award to a company in Elche that eliminates natural sugars



A process to eliminate the sugars naturally present in fruits is the development in which the start-up Freeshakes of the Miguel Hernández University Science Park (PCUMH) of Elche. Thanks to its innovation, this business project has been recognized in Team Up, a program promoted by the food innovation initiative EIT Food. Specifically, Freeshakes has received the third prize, endowed with 15,000 euros. This economic boost is in addition to the 6,000 euros that Freeshakes received after being one of those selected for the second phase of this program.

Freeshakes is a business project, promoted by UMH graduates in Biotechnology Antonio Fenoll and Álvaro Valdés. This initiative is currently working on a process to eliminate natural sugars like fructose from foods like fruit. In this way, it seeks to facilitate the preparation of food products, suitable for those intolerant to this carbohydrate, such as fruit juices, sauces or yogurts. The project was one of the winners of the first phase of the 9th UMH Marathon and the Innova Emprende contest of the University. Currently, he participates in the Makers program of the UMH Science Park.

Team Up is a program that seeks to connect professionals from the agrotechnology sector who want to promote an innovative start-up linked to this field. To do this, it offers tools, expert advice, as well as contacts and financing. Team Up is organized by EIT Food, one of the largest food innovation initiatives in Europe. Its objective is to transform the food system and make it more sustainable, healthy and trustworthy, thus improving the health of people and the environment.

On the other hand, the Occupational Observatory of the UMH will celebrate tomorrow, Thursday, November 11, starting at 6:30 p.m., the closing session of the XI Mentoring Program. The deputy vice-rector for Communication and Coordination of the UMH, Alicia de Lara González, will be in charge of opening the event, which will take place in the Sala Misteri of the Torrevaillo building on the Elche campus.

In this edition of the Program, 12 pairs of mentors and students / graduates have participated. Since February, the participants of the XI Programa Mentoring In their aspects of professional development, as well as support for entrepreneurs, they have received advice from professionals from different sectors of the business world. These mentors have guided and offered guidelines to follow to ensure the success of the future business, as well as to help, for example, to know first-hand the requirements of the companies and to prepare better. Also, to find out which specialty could be the most interesting, advise before a job interview, share your experience and increase the confidence of students or graduates. During the event, the mentors will take stock of the actions carried out with their respective mentors and the students / graduates will present their experience.
