Babies end up in hospital for being fed homemade formula

It is no secret to anyone that it is essential in the first stage of life of any baby to be able to be fed with breast milk; Nevertheless, there are different circumstances that sometimes prevent breastfeeding, so that there are little ones who should be fed formula milk, which must always be prescribed by a doctor.

Unfortunately, there are parents who ignore the advice and decide to give their babies any type of milk, including formulas that they prepare themselves at home, without being aware of the consequences that this can have on their children.

A new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English), indicated that Several babies have had to be hospitalized for showing signs of rickets as well as brain injuries after having been fed with homemade formulas based on the so-called alkaline diet.

The first thing to understand is the concept of alkaline diet. In recent times it has become very popular because several celebrities have indicated that they have followed this eating plan to lose extra kilos; cconsists in eating only alkaline foods, that is, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes and soybeans, and limiting acidic foods, such as those of animal origin and cereals, because thus, supposedly, a healthy PH is maintained and therefore, better health, a statement that it does not have any scientific support.

Formula based on an alkaline diet contained ingredients like sea moss, hemp seeds, dates, coconut water, and alkaline water, but they had insufficient nutrients like vitamin D and calcium.

The CDC indicated that 3 babies who were fed this formula had to be hospitalized with life-threatening signs, which could be related to the consumption of this type of formulas.

First, a 4 month old baby, was taking alkaline formula for a month and sadly, had to be intubated and received respiratory support after presenting several cardiac arrests before the paramedics came to his house to treat him.

After resuscitating him and in the hospital, the doctors discovered that he had suffered brain damage due to lack of oxygen and had low levels of electrolytes. He also had signs of rickets and softening or weakening of the bones at one end, caused by a lack of vitamin D.

Another 5-month-old baby was rushed to the hospital with stiff limbs, bluish skin and breathing problems. The little one was fed alkaline diet formula for 2 months.

Tests showed low calcium levels and bone deformities indicative of rickets. They gave him an IV loaded with calcium and magnesium and fortunately managed to stabilize him and discharge him.

The third baby a 9 month old child, He arrived at the hospital after exhibiting excessively irritable behavior for 5 days. Doctors found that he was underweight and short for his age and his head was somewhat misshapen; He could not sit up on his own and also had motor problems.

The tests also showed that the baby was deficient in calcium, vitamin D, and iodine. Supplements were administered and he was discharged to a long-term care facility.

The CDC as well as specialists in infant nutrition have urged parents not to feed their children with these types of homemade formulas, as they could cause serious consequences in their long-term development, as well as life-threatening conditions, such as heart failure.

Among the ingredients that alkaline diet-based formula milks usually contain, one of the main ones is sea moss, which can be dangerous because it contains large amounts of iodine, which could damage the thyroid and interfere with hormonal balance.
