Bellator 286 results, highlights: Patricio Pitbull outpoints Adam Borics to retain featherweight title

Patricio Pitbull lived up to his status as the most decorated champion in Bellator history. Pitbull made good on the first title defense of his third reign as featherweight champion against Adam Borics at Bellator 286 on Saturday night.

Pitbull was one step ahead of Borics for almost the entirety of their main event fight inside Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. Pitbull expertly controlled the range over the course of five rounds, rarely allowing Borics to utilize his five-inch reach and height advantages. Pitbull generally landed the harder counter shots and Borics was often regulated to single and two-strike combinations. Three times in the fight Borics tried for a flying knee and each time he ended in a compromising position — either on his back or with his back taken.

Borics managed to close the gap in the championship rounds, but it was too little, too late. All three scorecards read in favor of Pitbull by varying degrees of 48-47, 49-46 and 50-45. It was the champion’s ability to manage distance, land harder punches and dominate the grappling exchanges that earned him the unanimous decision.

“Why are you booing me?” Pitbull asked a Long Beach crowd who was restless throughout the main event. “I’m the f—ing champion. I’m the f—ing G.O.A.T. F— you, everyone.”

Pitbull acknowledged his interest in fighting Aaron Pico but suggested Pico’s shoulder injury — which he suffered earlier in the night in a TKO loss to Jeremy Kennedy — will derail those plans. Instead, Pitbull plans to move down to the bantamweight division in hopes of achieving the absurd feat of winning world titles in three separate divisions.

Pitbull improved to 34-5 professionally as he prepares for his move to the 135-pound division ruled by champion Sergio Pettis and interim champion Raufeon Stots. Borics dropped to 18-2 professionally and waved goodbye to his four-fight winning streak.
