Since its import into Spain, the Black Friday it conquers more shops every year and extends over the calendar beyond a single day -this year on November 27-, multiplying the possibilities for consumers to find suggestive offers.

One month before Christmas, Black Friday has become one of the great commercial events of the year. But what is its origin?

Like Halloween, although of a different look, it is about an event with american roots that has gradually been gaining weight in much of the world.

But where does this event that everyone is talking about now come from? There are many rumors surrounding the origin of Black Friday and, above all, its dismal name, which seems to have nothing to do with frantic shopping, baroque shop windows and the start of the Christmas campaign.

Perhaps in Spain less is known, but every American knows that this commercial commercial celebration takes place the day after Thanksgiving, in which American families congregate at the table around a stuffed turkey.

The festive and optimistic atmosphere that surrounds this date was taken advantage of by the ingenuity of the merchants, who decided to make offers of all kinds in their stores, a move that came out successfully. The increase in purchases in the Christmas campaign served to feed the urban legend that the concept ‘Black Friday’ had its origin in that on that exact day the red numbers of the stores become ‘black’ thanks to the explosive increase in purchases and income of merchants.

However, it is necessary to travel to the city of Philadelphia to discover the true origin of ‘Black Friday’. Traditionally, the United States Naval and Military academies contest each year, the Saturday following Thanksgiving Thursday., a college football game which is one of the most media sporting events in the country.

Due to its geographical location between both academies, located respectively in Annapolis (Maryland) and West Point (New York), Philadelphia is a common setting for this event and, therefore, the destination of thousands of people interested in attending this match, who has as great incentive the rivalry between both schools of the US Army.

This mass event and the juicy offers in the stores were an explosive mix that in the mid-twentieth century plunged the streets of Philadelphia into a real chaos, both pedestrians and cars, and where traffic jams, accidents, crowds and crimes in the city were not at all strange, already one of the most populated in the country, the fifth. Little by little, the day before the Saturday of the game began to be called ‘Black Friday’ Among Philadelphia cops and bus drivers, a dreaded and dire day for local public services.

But again, the merchants of this town decided to take advantage of this overcrowding to reinforce their sales: openings for a good part or all day and a very high activity of purchases and transfer of merchandise to be sold. Thus, store employees and carriers, overwhelmed by stress, joined the name of ‘black Friday’ for this date. Word of mouth did the rest, and in 1975, a newspaper article ‘The New York Times’ completed this progressive popularization giving the name of ‘Black Friday’ to the appointment.

Decades later, ‘Black Friday’ is already a reality. On the 27th, a month before Christmas, we will see numerous discount posters in many commercial areas. The most important thing, as buyers, is that we are aware that the best way to benefit from these offers is to buy only what we believe is necessary, among other tips, and thus avoid that what started as a day of discounts does not generate a considerable hole in our accounts.
