The general director of the Community Agrarian Policy and representatives of the sector meet in Mérida to coordinate the allegations to the draft of the new state decree

The general director of the Community Agrarian Policy of the Junta de Extremadura, Javier Gonzalo, and representatives of the beekeeping sector in the region have met this Monday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Population and Territory, in Mérida, to coordinate the allegations to the draft of the new state decree in order to have a package of measures that promote research on varroa.

According to the general director, among the new measures, “the most important” are the actions related to the treatment of varroa, with the aim of using part of the program for research on other molecules of this mite, which is the main cause both from the reduction of hives and from the production of honey.

For this reason, technical issues were discussed during the meeting to try to strengthen research against varroosis and technical assistance to the sector, reports the Junta de Extremadura in a press release.

It is about “agreeing on the proposal that we are going to transfer to Madrid to have a powerful research package” and that “there are sufficient funds” among all the autonomous communities for research as it is a “common problem”, Javier Gonzalo has specified.

Aid for beekeeping

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Population and Territory recently paid 7.7 million euros corresponding to aid for beekeeping for the conservation of biodiversity and balances from the restructuring of the vineyard.

This has been explained by Javier Gonzalo himself, who pointed out that 5,170,000 euros were paid to 606 beekeepers from the 2016 call, more than 1.2 million euros to 162 application files from 2018 and 633,500 euros to 87 files from the 2019 call.

To this must be added the payment of organic beekeeping to 4 beneficiaries for an amount of 35,109 euros.

«The objective is to improve and conserve plant biodiversity in the ecosystems of Extremadura, in which there may be species of high ecological value, in addition to maintaining an adequate level of activity in transhumant beekeeping as an activity that favors the conservation of wild flora» , he added.

Community with the largest number of hives and professionals

In recent years, Extremadura has become the community with the largest number of registered hives and the largest number of beekeeping professionals.

On the other hand, 699,185 euros have also been deposited corresponding to the balance of 71 vineyard restructuring aid files, called in 2018, once the actions of varietal change and improvement of the requested exploitation techniques have been certified.
