BT Sport pundit and former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has claimed ‘remorseful’ cat-kicking Kurt Zouma ‘needs punishment’, and praised Mark Noble for dealing with the situation.

Zouma, 27, previously came under scrutiny after a horrifying Snapchat video revealed the West Ham defender kicking and slapping his Bengal cat across his £2million London home.

The footage emerged the day after he appeared for the Hammers in their FA Cup victory over non-league Kidderminster Harriers.

West Ham said the club will ‘deal with the matter internally, while Zouma has also previously stated he is ‘deeply sorry’.

Speaking on BT Sport ahead of the Hammers’ clash at home against Premier League strugglers Newcastle, Ferdinand had his say on the incident.

‘Firstly, I think Kurt Zouma is remorseful, which is important when you make this big play with the situation’, the ex-Manchester United defender said.

‘I think West Ham, with hindsight, they didn’t expect the uproar but they would look back and think “Maybe we should have taken him out of the firing line against Watford.” What has happened since then, they have been scrutinized.

‘He needs punishment. The RSPCA are now investigating the case. I think a punishment will come and he will think “I need to take that punishment that comes my way.”‘

Ferdinand also praised the actions of West Ham captain Mark Noble who he claims helped deal with the situation in a professional manner.

‘We hear that Mark Noble has called a captains’ meeting as well. You need to know where your squad are at and it’s good to find out who’s not happy.

‘What are you concerned about it? Let’s keep the harmony in the squad.’ Don’t forget West Ham are in a position to get into Europe and the Champions League even.

‘They need to be mindful without glossing over the issue. I think Mark Noble as done an admirable job in that.’

The Hammers will leapfrog Manchester United into fourth place in the Premier League with a victory over Eddie Howe’s side, but will have played a game more than Ralph Rangnick’s United, who take on Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday.
