SailGP, the international flying catamaran championship, announces today that it will disembark for the first time in Spain, and will do so in the capital of Cádiz, on October 9 and 10, 2021, thus closing its European stage. Saint-Tropez, acclaimed host of prestigious sailing competitions, also announces today that it will host the fifth SailGP event, France Grand Prix | Saint-Tropez, on September 11 and 12. These two new venues extend a season that will feature nine events, seven of which have already been announced.
With the announcement of Cádiz, the league secures a test in Spain after a selection process in which a total of five candidate cities have been evaluated, including Barcelona, Ibiza, Lanzarote and Valencia.
SailGP Managing Director Sir Russell Coutts said: “The announcement of two new venues and the selection process that has taken place in Spain shows that cities are recognizing the economic benefits and global audience of hosting a SailGP Grand Prix. Both the Bay of Cádiz and the French Riviera will provide a perfect setting for spectacular coastal regattas, under the exciting format of “stadium racing”. With nine events planned, of which seven have already been announced, and eight highly competitive national teams, we look forward to an unrivaled and exciting second season of SailGP. “
According to the SailGP directive, many variables have been taken into account when choosing the headquarters in Spain: “The bay of Cádiz offers unique conditions for the navigation of this type of boat and the weather conditions in October are magnificent for tourism. Our commitment is to offer a great event, not only for the city, but for all of Andalusia and Spain. Undoubtedly, the first SailGP Grand Prix in our country will be a show that will attract tourism and contribute to economic recovery in the coming years. The selection process has not been easy, as all the cities have submitted very attractive applications ”.
The Andalusian event will have the support of the main regional and local administrations, among which the Junta de Andalucía stands out, through the Ministry of Tourism, which will support both the event in Spain, and the Spanish SailGP team, whose catamaran, the “F50 Victoria”, will wear the Andalusian logo around the world throughout the season.
The Spain Grand Prix Andalucía will be held on October 9 and 10 during the Hispanidad bridge, thus reinforcing the tourist attraction of the Cadiz capital during those dates.
The competition calendar already announced has the following appointments in 2021:
Bermuda Grand Prix April 24 and 25
Italy Grand Prix June 5 and 6
Great Britain Grand Prix 17 y 18 de julio
Denmark Grand Prix August 20 and 21
