Capsule Dragon makes a “dip” off the coast of Florida on its return to Earth

A Dragon capsule fell this Monday helped by a parachute to the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Florida, on his return from the International Space Station (ISS), reported the company SpaceX.

After entering Earth’s atmosphere, the spacecraft made an assisted splashdown around 4:05 p.m. EST today as planned, just off the coast of Panama City in northwest Florida.

Dragon dip confirmed, completing SpaceX’s 24th resupply mission to the @Space Station,” Elon Musk’s company tweeted.

The unmanned supply capsule from SpaceX and the US space agency NASA arrived loaded with valuable experiments carried out by astronauts in the microgravity laboratory.

EThis SpaceX company ship left the ISS yesterday, Sunday, after detaching from the Harmony module of the station, with more than 2 tons of materials from valuable scientific experiments.

After firing its thrusters to move to a safe distance from the ISS, the capsule’s controllers ordered an orbit start on Monday.

The capsule was launched on December 21 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in central Florida and reached the ISS in less than 24 hours.

The spacecraft then delivered nearly three tons of hardware, research, and supplies to the crew.

The agency explained that the splashdown near the Florida coast allows researchers at the Kennedy Space Center to quickly collect the cargo “with minimal exposure of the sample to Earth’s gravity.”

SpaceX explained on Monday that once the Dragon is recovered, “the critical science on board the spacecraft” will be transported by helicopter to the NASA center.

Among the cargo are samples of protein crystals grown on the station for the Advanced Nano Step experiment.

At the Kennedy Space Center, scientists are scheduled to analyze the samples to develop new materials and drugs in space and to assess the impacts of weightlessness on biochemistry.
