Cardinals’ 2023 schedule opens at home, swings through London, and features new twists

CHICAGO — In addition to any lingering jetlag from their midseason jaunt to London, the Cardinals will have the tussle with two of the top teams in the American League upon their return from abroad.

The Yankees will be visiting – again – and Houston, too, finally.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ 2023 schedule was officially released Wednesday afternoon and, in addition to the international series against the Cubs in June, it features a complete rewrite on how Major League Baseball does interleague play. Everyone plays everyone. And from here, MLB’s plan is to have a regular, predictable rotation to interleague series. The Cardinals host the Yankees in odd years, visit the Bronx in even years. The Cardinals travel to Fenway Park in odd years, and the Red Sox visit St. Louis in even years.

The Cardinals and Cubs will rarely visit the same American League ballparks in the same year, and in 2023 that only happens against their “natural” rivals.

The increased number of interleague games reduces the divisional games. Instead of the 19 games that the Cardinals currently play against other National League Central teams, like the Brewers and Cubs, they will play 13 games within the division.

The new look to the interleague schedule starts from the top as the Cardinals have a rare home game on opening day March 30 and they host … Toronto, as reported several weeks ago by the Post-Dispatch. Elsewhere in the majors, the Yankees host the San Francisco Giants, formerly of New York, on opening day for those teams first meeting in the Bronx since 2016.

The Cardinals-Blue Jays game is one of three interleague matchups on opening day.

All 30 teams will play on opening day.

Some other highlights and notable events on the 2023 schedule:

• The Cardinals will play a two-game series against Kansas City at home and another on the road. The Royals received a weekend series against the Cardinals on August 11-12, but because it’s a two game series that gives the Cardinals the rare Sunday off day.

• In interleague play, the Cardinals will host Toronto (March 30-April 2), Los Angeles Angels (May 2-4), Detroit (May 5-7), Houston (June 27-29), Yankees (June 30-July 2), Minnesota (August 1-3), and Oakland (August 14-16).

The Astros, the Cardinals’ former NL rival who jumped to the American League before rebuilding as a contender, and Yankees will be the home stand that immediately follows the Cardinals’ trip to London.

• The Cardinals will travel to Seattle (April 21-23), Boston (May 12-14), Cleveland (May 26-28), Texas (June 5-7), Tampa Bay (August 8-10), Chicago for the White Sox (July 7-9), and Baltimore (Sept. 11-13).

• The Cardinals gave up two home games to host the Cubs in London (June 24-25), and as a result the Cubs make only one trip to St. Louis this season. But it’s a doozy. The Cubs will play in St. Louis from July 27-30, right up until the yet-to-be-determined trade deadline.

• The Cardinals close the season at home against Cincinnati (Sept. 29-Oct. 1).

• The Cardinals will play 42 of their 81 home games before the All-Star Game in Seattle.

• There are 16 home games in August.

• The only home holiday game is May 29 against Kansas City.

• The Cardinals’ longest homestand of the season bridges the trade-deadline time and will feature visits from Minnesota, Colorado, and start with the lengthy Cubs series.

• The Cardinals longest road trip is over with early in the season as they swing through Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles (to face the Dodgers) at the end of April.

The Cardinals and Major League Baseball will make announcements on game times, national telecasts, and other information, such as ticket details, later in the year.
