“Chineo”: the aberrant “custom” of which girls in indigenous communities in Argentina are victims

Sadly, despite living in the XXI century, we continue to see heinous acts committed against women, regardless of their age, economic status or social class, which claim the lives of hundreds of them a year.

Sadly in Argentina, various media as well as Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s), In some rural and indigenous communities, the men who live in them carry out a malpractice called “going out to chinear”, that as the actress and comedian Flor de la V explains in a column published in the online newspaper pagina12.com.ar consists in that the men go out in a group or “herd” to chase, stalk a girl or adolescent, grab her by the hair to drag her into the bush, where they repeatedly sexually abuse her and then leave her to her fate.

Due to the injuries that aggression usually causes to minors, several of them lose their lives.

Precisely, de la V denounced in her column what happened to a little girl of only 12 years identified only as Pamela, who was originally from Tartagal, a small Wichí indigenous community, belonging to Salta, lost her life due to this custom.

According to information provided by the NGO, “Aid to the original peoples”, in the case of this little girl, only a 17-year-old boy has been arrested, who pleaded guilty to the crime but does not want to give the name of the other 4 participants so aberrant act.

Family and friends of Pamela demand that justice be done in this case.

In fact, the NGO mentioned above denounces that, in particular, Wichí girls and young people live a harsh reality due to the precarious and violent environment in which they develop. They also assure that many inhabitants of this region in Argentina have expressed their concern regarding the “chineo”; but nevertheless, the victim or her relatives are not heard and therefore do not report the act because the authorities justify it by arguing that it is a “cultural practice”.

Girls and young people who have been victims of these group abuses indicate that the possibility of having emergency contraception is hindered, as well as exams or treatments to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, of which they are completely unaware.

Another thing that the Wichí community denounces is that, in the hospitals or wards of these localities, they are denied a diagnosis stating that they have been raped, to prevent them from continuing to try to file a complaint.

It is also known that several minors who have suffered from chineo have lost their lives due to complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

This crime is typified in the Penal Code of Argentina as rape with carnal access and, in many cases, murder; Unfortunately it seems that nobody does anything about this terrible evil.
