Is it finally happening?
For seven years, wrestling fans have been begging to see CM Punk return to the ring. And now it looks like it could finally be happening.
Punk was just 35 years old and at the height of his popularity when he retired in 2014 (those unfamiliar with his career might think of him as the Barry Sanders of wrestling). a deal with WWE and quickly became one of the company’s biggest stars, winning the men’s singles title five times. But his disagreements with Vince McMahon led to a disorderly exit from WWE and his retirement from wrestling altogether.
Since he left, Punk has remained in the public eye. He tried his luck (unsuccessfully) in the UFC, acted in a few movies, and dabbled in WWE analysis for Fox Sports. But fans have never stopped clamoring for him to return to the ring. Since he left, restless crowds from WWE have chanted his name as a way of expressing their disgust with Punk’s enemies in the corporate office. However, aside from a masked cameo at a little show in Milwaukee two years ago, Punk hasn’t gotten into the ropes. At least until now.
On Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Darby Allin cut a short promo that sounded a lot like a challenge to Punk.
“You know, I have been surrounded by many men in this world who have claimed that they are the best,” Allin said. “There’s only one place to really prove it, right here at AEW, even if you think you’re the best in the world.”
When Tony Schiavone announced that AEW would be coming to Chicago on August 20, ahead of Allin’s promotion, the crowd in Charlotte began chanting Punk’s name.
There are some hints that Punk’s comeback might be just around the corner. The first, and most obvious, is that FighterSean Ross Sapp reported last week that Punk was in talks with AEW. And then there is the Allin promotion. The phrase “the best in the world” is a reference to the old Punk catchphrase, the one in their WWE jerseys. That, plus the fact that the show Allin is promoting will take place in Punk’s hometown of Chicago, isn’t a subtle hint. And AEW, which rarely performs shows in NBA / NHL stadiums, has booked the United Center for this event. You must be expecting to sell a lot of tickets in the three weeks leading up to the show.
It remains to be seen what Punk’s return will be like. It is highly unlikely that he will resume a full-time ring career, but even the possibility of him showing up in one more match is incredibly exciting. In an industry where over-the-top performers are repeated for cheap pops and lousy matches, the prospect of a healthy 42-year-old returning to give fans what they’ve wanted for the better part of a decade is huge. tempting.
