College Football Polls: AP Top 25 Updated, Coaches Poll Ranking After Week 14

To what extent will the final AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll polls reflect the final rankings of the college football playoffs?

The traditional rankings of the top 25 have lost importance at this point in the season as the college football faithful hang on to every decision of the CFP selection committee. But they’re still worth monitoring, as it provides an early indication of how the committee might rank its top 25 and, more importantly, its top four.

Four Saturday games will rank the top of the AP and Coaches polls: Georgia’s 41-24 loss to No. 3 Alabama in the SEC championship; No. 2 Michigan 42-3 win over No. 13 Iowa in the Big Ten championship; No. 4 Cincinnati’s 35-20 victory over No. 16 Houston in the AAC championship; and No. 5 Oklahoma State’s 21-16 loss to No. 9 Baylor in the Big 12 championship.

Those games will have the biggest impact at the top of the leaderboard, but there was more to conference championship weekend than just those games. No. 17 Utah again beat No. 10 Oregon in a 38-10 victory in the Pac-12 championship game, setting up the Utes for first place in the Rose Bowl. And No. 15 Pitt beat No. 16 Wake Forest 45-21, setting up a New Year’s Day 6 spot at the Peach or Fiesta Bowl for the ACC champions.

Sporting News breaks down how those games and more affected the latest AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll rankings after the conference champions weekend:
