Sportiness is not at odds with comfort, as demonstrated by the second generation of the Bavarian sedan in its most radical variant.

Sweeping aesthetics, excellent performance and a feeling of intimate connection with the road. For the first time, BMW has developed an M version for the 4 Series Gran Coupé, the M440i Gran Coupé variant, a waste of sensations on the road without losing the functionality of the four doors and five seats.

Available only with xDrive all-wheel drive, the 374CV M440i is the pinnacle of the second generation of the Bavarian saloon, which is also available with gasoline and diesel mechanics between 184 and 245CV. All variants are mated to a particularly efficient 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission – with steering wheel paddles for manual operation – and can be chosen with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with the exception of our M440i, which is available only with all-wheel drive.

In the aesthetic section, in addition to the prominent kidneys that serve as a distinctive sign of the new generation of BMW, the fluid fall of the roof and the carbon details, for example, in the rear-view mirrors, are noticeable. Our unit is also equipped with the optional BMW Laserlight headlights, which give a characteristic appearance to the front as well as offering a lighting distance much greater than that of LED headlights. And the large specific 18-inch wheels stand out as standard, 19 in the case of our unit.

Inside, the level of comfort is high, especially for the front passengers and not so much, due to the small access difficulties imposed by the design, in the rear, although once inside it is also comfortable to travel. The level of refinement of the finishes is very high, highlighting the Vernasca leather seats and the huge optional opening panoramic roof. The box is digital in the case of our unit, which BMW calls Live Cockpit Professional, with 12.3 inches, with a 10.25-inch central infotainment screen.

The M440i offers high levels of sportiness, but above all a superb sense of control over the vehicle. The work on the chassis and the steering allows fast driving without surprises, always with the perception that the car will faithfully respond to what is asked of it. To this contributes the low center of gravity and the balance in the distribution of weights, which according to BMW borders on the ideal of 50:50.

The suspension, with electronically adjustable dampers on this variant, is firm without being uncomfortable and benefits from inter-turret reinforcement bars fitted to the front and rear axles. The steering, also variable, is informative and, again, the best word to describe its operation is “efficient”. In addition, the M440i features a variable locking M Sport differential, the secret to its exceptional grip when driving fast.

An additional advantage of the BMW M440i is the 48-volt microhybridization system (MHEV) that it incorporates, and that allows it to display the ECO label on the windscreen. Using a starter generator, the driver can have up to 11 additional hp if sudden acceleration is required, for example when overtaking on a secondary road. In addition, it reduces consumption, by taking advantage of part of the energy of decelerations and braking. The approved brand, by the way, ranges between 8 and 8.5 liters per hundred kilometers, and climbed to 10.2 during our test, around 200 kilometers along a mostly urban and mixed route.

The driver can select between Sport, Comfort, Eco Pro and customizable Adaptive modes, which predictively adjust driving based on the route to achieve an ideal balance between consumption and performance.
