Four years after having obtained the positive Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) from the Junta de Extremadura, the first stone of the Las Jaras photovoltaic plant in Badajoz has been laid.

The solar project of the energy company Naturgy has a planned investment of 28 million euros and will be located between the terms of La Albuera and Badajoz. When the works are finished, it will have a capacity of 50 MW and will produce around 123 GWh/year of energy, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 35,200 homes.

As announced by the company, more than 360 direct and indirect jobs will be created during the construction, maintenance and operation phases of the facility.

The Naturgy company calculates that Las Jaras de Badajoz will reduce the emission of almost 78,300 tons of CO2 per year and “it has been designed with all the premises of environmental and landscape integration”, it reviews. The company highlights that sheep will be used to carry out maintenance inside the facility, the creation of reserve areas for rainfed crop rotation (25 hectares) and the location of nest boxes at different points in the facility. .

The act of laying the first stone was attended by the Minister for the Ecological Transition and Sustainability, Olga García, the mayor of La Albuera, Manuel Antonio Díaz, and the mayor of Badajoz, Ignacio Gragera, together with the person in charge of Project Development of Naturgy, Juan Ferrero, the Naturgy Construction Manager, Elisa Ferrando, and the Naturgy Project Development Manager in Extremadura, Ana Ruiz, today laid the first stone of the Las Jaras photovoltaic plant in Badajoz.

The Minister for the Ecological Transition and Sustainability has highlighted “that photovoltaic deployment is a virtuous circle of activity, employment and wealth generation from which all of Extremadura benefits, so we are not going to miss out on the immense future opportunity that a balanced generation of clean energy”, he highlighted.

«From the City Council of La Albuera we show our satisfaction with the construction project of a photovoltaic plant in our municipal area. This will decisively contribute to sustainable development through renewable energies, job creation and, ultimately, to commit to a new model of rural development”, stressed the mayor of La Albuera.

For his part, the mayor of Badajoz stressed that Badajoz continues to be at the forefront in Europe in the production of renewable energies, and that this means sustainability, investment and the future. During his speech, Gragera highlighted not only the advantages of an “environmentally friendly infrastructure”, but also that it is “a project that opens important opportunities for generating employment for the city of Badajoz”.

The head of Project Development at Naturgy has indicated that “for our company today is an important day. We lay the first stone of a new renewable project in Extremadura that adds to the other facilities that we have in the Community and that once again confirms our firm commitment to this region.” Juan Ferrero has insisted that “this plant demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to increasing renewable generation and being an active agent in the energy transition.”

In a statement, the company maintains that “within its philosophy of promoting the economic and social development of all those areas in which it is present with its activity, Naturgy will subcontract companies from the province and the region for the construction of this plant. , as well as workers in the area.

Renewable in Extremadura

The Naturgy company has different projects in the region. The company is the promoter of the only wind farm in the region, Merengue (it produced more than 124 GWh of renewable energy between January and December 2021).

In addition, the company has several projects under construction in the region, a photovoltaic solar plant in the municipality of Castuera, another in Plasencia and the second wind farm in the region, also in the town of Plasencia.

In addition to these projects, Naturgy has others in the fairly advanced processing phase, which add up to more than 450 MW of power.
