Answering fifteen questions out of four possible options to reach the million euros at stake is the simple formula of ‘Who wants to be a millionaire?’, the mythical format that has already been adapted in more than 120 territories around the world and that, this night at 10:00 p.m., he returns to Antena 3. At the head of the program, Juanra Bonet (Barcelona, 47 years old) repeats, already a classic of television contests after triumphing every afternoon, for eight years, with ‘! Boom!’. “I do see myself doing the same thing for 25 years, but it depends on the viewers,” she says.

-Return ‘Who wants to be a millionaire?’ in the spirit of the original format. How do you deal with it?

-With great emotion because we return to the spirit with which the program was born. An anonymous contestant and fifteen questions. They have been incredible recordings, with emotion and lots of laughter.

-Will there be any news?

-Last year we recovered the wild card of the call, but this new season we have returned to the companion on the set. The call, sometimes, is typical of being cut off, we don’t hear and you never know if Google is looking. Now we bet that the contestant chooses a person she trusts, who is in the stands and when he asks for the wild card, he goes down and is next to her. They are talking for a while and it gives a kind of oasis of peace to whoever is playing.

-How do you remember the first time you were asked to present this mythical contest?

-I was very excited. I keep secrets very well, but I think it was the first time they burned me in the mouth. I really wanted to tell everyone. It seems to me that it is an amazing format, which is made all over the planet and has a long history. It even has a movie, which won a lot of awards. It is a car that every driver would want to drive sometime.

The proposal

«I was very excited, it is an amazing format that is made all over the planet»

-After a season with celebrities, now the anonymous contestants are back. Notice the difference in the contest?

-With the famous, as you already know them, the curiosity is to know how they are going to play. With anonymous, curiosity increases, because you don’t know who they are. There is the curiosity of seeing the game of a popular character, but the person on the street also has his own story, strategy and experiences. It is a discovery.

-Making this program so calm in ‘prime time’, is it a miracle of television?

-This means that, many times, the simplest thing works. In the kitchen, for example, even if you fancy a very elaborate dish, it ends up losing out to a simple fillet or sole. ‘Who wants to be a millionaire?’ It’s a perfect contest. As a viewer, I also like this act of rebellion, in which I am going to put on a ‘prime time’ program where there are two people sitting, looking at each other and thinking. The entire management and production team of the program has enjoyed it very much. They told me: “Put more pause” (laughs).

-Is it more difficult to participate in ‘Boom!’ or in ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’?

-In ‘Boom!’, the contestants are working as a team. For them, it’s a liberation, because if you don’t know a question, someone else can answer it. In the ‘Millionaire’ they are alone. They only have the joker with a single person and nothing else. Here you have to face the machine, as they used to say in my day. There are no opponents. As a presenter, I also have a more liquid role, because I depend on what the contestant is looking for. I can be his colleague or his confidante. As a participant, yes, I would go with three friends to ‘Boom!’, who are much smarter than me.

An objective

«We are just a contest to disconnect and the next day do important things»

-What do Antena 3 competitions have that bring together such a large and loyal audience?

-The truth is that I don’t know the secret and if I did, I wouldn’t say it (laughs). I do know that they choose us, not only because of the contest, but because we make a lot of company. There are spectators who see us in hospitals and in families. You can leave the TV on, start making dinner for the children and you are calm. The contests also have something of a radio because you are listening to a familiar voice, at the same time, every day. It has that magic of the radio, because they are part of the family.

-Now that ‘Know and win’ is birthday. Do you see yourself doing the same thing for 25 years?

-I do see myself. Hopefully, but it depends on the viewers. Those who rule are those who turn the TV on or off. If they choose us to keep them company for twenty years, imagine. We don’t do anything else. We are just a contest to disconnect and be able to reset the head, and the next day do important things.
