HBO is working on a possible continuation of ‘Game of Thrones’ through the character played by Kit Harington

That HBO was not going to let the ‘Game of Thrones’ phenomenon escape easily was predictable, given the audience figures it reported and the interest it aroused around the world. And, above all, taking into account how complicated it is to repeat a similar phenomenon today, when the offer of platforms and series has grown so much.

Once the popular fiction ended, the chain commissioned the development of several possible sequels to assess how and where they could continue exploiting the vein. The first of all of them to see the light will be ‘The House of the Dragon’, around the Targaryen house that ruled Westeros for centuries. It is actually a prequel that takes place 300 years after the events we met in the original series. It will be released on the platform on August 21 and aims to be the great asset to face the adaptation of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ that Amazon will present a few days later.

It had previously been announced -a pilot episode was even recorded- another related title that was going to star Naomi Watts, but that was finally ruled out. In another kind of limbo are other productions about the warrior queen Nymeria, related to House Martell; on the Flea Bed, one of the most unknown areas of King’s Landing; or about Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, based on the novellas by George RR Martin. Of these it is known that they are in development for there is no news of whether they will continue or not. It is likely that HBO wants to see how ‘The House of the Dragon’ works first, of which the full season has already been recorded.

Meanwhile other projects are added to the trail of ‘Game of Thrones’. ‘The Hollywood Reporter’ has now published that a possible continuation of the original story is being worked on through the figure of Jon Snow, the bastard of Winterfell, who was actually the original heir to the Iron Throne – he was Stark on the part of mother and Targaryen, by father. At the moment it is an embryonic idea, which does not have the approval of the network, but the truth is that Kit Harington, the actor who gave life to the character, is behind this new series, something that could help it finally roll.

In this way Jon Snow would rise again for the spectators. He already did it in the fifth season, after his companions at the Border of the Wall, the ravens, betrayed him and stabbed him for not being satisfied with some decisions he had made. This time the resurrection would come from HBO itself, which although initially did not seem interested in continuing with ‘Game of Thrones’ from the point where it left off, could now have changed its mind.

This decision would imply the possible return of other protagonists of the series, such as Bran Stark, who became King of the Seven Kingdoms, or Sansa Stark, whom we had left as Queen of the North. Jon Snow, in the outcome of the HBO fiction, had returned beyond the wall after having ended the life of her beloved Daenerys, to prevent her from destroying her. Was it a punctual or definitive withdrawal? Did he continue to maintain contact with his relatives or did he disengage from them? What new life awaited him beyond the wall? Some of those questions could be resolved if the HBO project moves forward.
