Coronavirus in Extremadura: Extremadura reports 1,548 cases and 108 hospitalized for covid

Despite the increase in the number of hospitalized patients, the percentage of beds occupied by patients with coronavirus is among the lowest in the country

The number of hospitalized in the region due to covid follows an upward trend. This Friday, according to the report of the Ministry of Health made public, the figure exceeds the hundred barrier and stands at 102 people, 16 more than those reported last Tuesday. Four of them are in the ICU. The region did not exceed a hundred admitted since February 23.

Despite this increase, Extremadura remains among the communities with the lowest percentage of bed occupancy by patients with coronavirus, 3.36%, only ahead of Aragón and Andalusia.

As for the death toll, Health records that five people have died in the last week from covid. The weekly mortality rate per million inhabitants remains the second highest in the country, at 40.27, only below Asturias, a community that has gone back on some restrictions. Since the start of the pandemic, 2,306 people have died from the coronavirus.

Extremadura has also added 1,548 new cases of covid-19 since last Tuesday, of which 912 positives have occurred in people over 60 years of age, bringing the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 258,511.


These figures of new infections make the cumulative incidence of sixty-year-olds rise to 587.71 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This rate increases to 853.97 positives in people between 70 and 79 years old and exceeds a thousand, with 1,022.14, in those over 80 years old.

Finally, the Ministry has reported that 2,478 tests have been carried out in the last seven days, 1,827 antigen tests and 661 PCR, with a positivity rate of 33.9%, the fifth highest in the country. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that this figure be below five percent to consider the spread of the virus as ‘controlled’.

National data

The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health this Friday of 49,143 new cases of covid-19, of which 21,291 have occurred in people over 60 years of age.

The total number of infections in Spain has already risen to 11,786,036 since the start of the pandemic, according to official statistics. The incidence in people over 60 years of age stands at 555.47 in the last 14 days per 100,000, compared to 505.86 on Tuesday. In the past two weeks, a total of 68,423 positives have been registered in this age group.

Up to 103,908 people with a positive diagnostic test have died since the virus arrived in Spain, according to data collected by the Ministry. In the last week, 203 have died with a confirmed positive in Spain.

Currently, there are 6,119 patients admitted and positive for covid-19 throughout Spain (5,635 on Tuesday) and 339 in the ICU (345 on Tuesday). The occupancy rate of beds occupied by coronavirus stands at 4.94 percent (4.59% on Tuesday) and in ICUs at 3.76 percent (3.84% on Tuesday).

Between March 29 and April 4, the autonomous communities have carried out 137,496 diagnostic tests on people over 60 years of age, of which 74,579 have been PCR and 62,917 antigen tests, with an overall rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 1,116.21.

Meanwhile, the positivity rate stands at 26.62 percent, up from 25.72 percent on Tuesday.
