Hospitals in Extremadura continue to feel the effect of the new uptick in coronavirus cases in the region. In recent weeks, daily infections of covid-19 have increased, which has led to an increase in serious cases. In fact, during the last few days the number of people admitted with covid in Extremadura has been rising, a trend that continues this Friday.

According to the latest report published by the Ministry of Health, there are currently 73 infected with the virus hospitalized in the Extremaduran community, three more than this Thursday and eight more than last Friday. Of the total number of those admitted, two are in the ICU (one more than yesterday). Despite this rebound, the Minister of Health, José María Vergeles, has indicated this Friday through his profile on social networks that the serious illness “is under control.”

In addition, the accumulated incidence in Extremadura continues to rise and continues to approach the barrier of one thousand cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants at 14 days. This Friday that parameter stands at 930 cases, ten points more than yesterday. The data represents double the Spanish average, which already records 445 cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants, and has been placed as the highest in the country. It is followed by Galicia with 899, and the Canary Islands with 874. The infection rate reached 3,788 in the region on January 21, the maximum registered by the community in the pandemic. The minimum of the sixth wave was recorded at the beginning of March with 556 cases per one hundred thousand inhabitants.

The 7-day index is currently at 462 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants, twelve points more than this Thursday, while the national average is 100. The maximum for this indicator was recorded on January 14, when it reached 2,053 cases.

The counselor has also made reference to the situation of the pandemic in the region, whose curve continues to rise due to greater mobility and social gatherings held during carnivals. However, Vergeles points out that there are already signs that this escalation is moderating. «We have already spent two days where the indicators and predictors of the evolution of the covid infection are indicating that the rise due to carnivals is being controlled. Let’s hope so », he added.

On the other hand, from Tuesday to this Friday, 2,774 new covid positives have been reported, according to the document made public by the Ministry of Health. This means that the region has confirmed an average of 924 cases of coronavirus per day.

Regarding the elimination of the use of masks in interior spaces, Vergeles has stated that Extremadura will apply all the decisions of the Public Health Commission of the National Health System. “And for all aspects of public health, be it about the masks for covid or for the vaccination calendar. As he has always done », he added.
