The epidemiological curve of covid-19 in Extremadura is moderating. Both the number of people infected by the virus and the accumulated incidence are slowly but progressively decreasing, although for the time being this trend has not been transferred to Extremadura hospitals, where there are currently 187 hospitalized patients with coronaviruses, of which 8 are in the ICU.

The region has once again exceeded 1,000 positives this weekend. Specifically, according to the report made public by the Ministry of Health this Tuesday, the community has recorded 1,084 cases in the last three days, which is 338 cases less than last Tuesday, 875 less than two weeks ago and 1,041 cases less than a beginning of the month (Friday, July 1). According to these same sources, in the last seven days there have been 24 deaths.

The number of new infections that have been occurring in recent months in the general population is greater, since the health authorities only record the spread of the virus in serious cases, among vulnerable people as well as personnel in the social and health field and, therefore, Therefore, they do not represent the total number of SARS-CoV-2 infections. Since the end of March, asymptomatic positives or those with mild symptoms are no longer counted.

Of the last 1,084 positives registered in the region, more than half have occurred in people over 60 years of age, specifically 791. This brings the total number of infections since the start of the pandemic to 294,664.

This downward trend is being transferred to the accumulated incidence in those over 60 years of age, which has been in decline for more than a week. Precisely, the Minister of Health, José María Vergeles, has highlighted this Tuesday the behavior of said indicator. “It is already a week where the incidence of covid is decreasing, at a good pace. A more important decline in recent days. I hope that this will soon influence the serious illness and that the number of people admitted will decrease », he has stated through his social networks.

The accumulated incidence in Extremadura stands at 1,369 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 14 days in the population over 60 years of age and 552 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 7 days. They are 370 points less than the data registered on July 8 at 14 days and 387 points less at 7 days.

The Extremadura indicator is in fifth position in the ranking, surpassed by La Rioja (2,063), Cantabria (1,747), the Basque Country (1,575) and the Canary Islands (1,541).

The parameter among sexagenarians from Extremadura is 1,013 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 14 days; among people from 70 to 79 the indicator marks 1,478; and writes down the 1,852 in those from Extremadura who are over 80 years old.

hospitalized

However, this drop in the number of positives and the incidence has not yet been transferred to the number of admissions. The report from the Ministry of Health shows that there are 187 people hospitalized in the Extremadura region, only three less than last Tuesday but 16 more than two weeks ago. It should be remembered that at the beginning of the month there were 115 people hospitalized, while in mid-June that figure was much lower and was 67.

Of the patients who are currently admitted, eight remain in the ICU, two more than last Tuesday.

The positive is that Extremadura continues to be one of the communities with the lowest percentage of bed occupancy by patients with coronavirus, 6%, only behind Andalusia and Cantabria. The national average stands at 9.6%. In ICU beds, the occupancy registered in the region is 4.4%. This figure improves Cantabria, Aragon, Andalusia, Galicia, Murcia and La Rioja. The national average is 6.3%.

Finally, the Ministry has reported that 4,101 tests have been carried out in the last seven days, 3,719 antigen tests and 382 PCR, with a positivity rate of 48%. It is the third highest figure in the country. Extremadura is only behind Aragón, which has a positivity rate of 56%, and Navarra, with 50%. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that this figure be below five percent to consider the spread of the virus as ‘controlled’.
