Coronavirus in Extremadura: Those hospitalized for covid increase in the region, which adds 1,789 cases

The number of patients admitted for coronavirus increases and stands at 115 people, 15 more than in the last report from the Ministry of Health, published last Friday. You have to go back to February 16 to find a higher number of hospitalized in the region.

Of the total admitted, five are in intensive care, one more. The percentage of beds occupied by covid patients is 3.79% in acute care and 2.75% in ICU, values ​​lower than the national average, which is 5.56 and 4.02, respectively.

Regarding the new cases of coronavirus, 1,789 infections have been registered. This is the highest figure since the end of March. Of these, 1,175 have been reported in patients over 60 years of age.

The cumulative incidence in people over 60 years of age is 1,392 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at 14 days and 798 cases at seven. The rise compared to last Tuesday is 465 and 210 points, respectively. More specifically by age groups, sexuagenarians register a rate of 1,030 cases at 14 days; the septuagenarians, of 1,624; and those over 80 years of age stand at 1,740 cases.

Regarding diagnostic tests, Extremadura has carried out a total of 6,048 tests from April 23 to 29, of which 870 were PCR and 5,170 antigen tests. The rate per 100,000 inhabitants is 2,029 cases. Positivity rises to 44.38%.

Omicron

The ómicron variant continues to be the majority in Extremadura. According to the latest report of the ‘Update of the epidemiological situation of SARS-CoV-2 variants in Spain’, it represents 97.4% of the cases analyzed in the region: 61.6% of the BA.2 lineage ( the so-called stealthy, furtive or silent omicron) and 35.8% of the rest of the lineages (BA.1 -which was the initial one-, BA.3, BA.4 and BA.5).

The data correspond to epidemiological week 16, that is, the period between April 18 and 25. The previous week, the omicron accounted for 98.3%: 80.6% the silent omicron and 17.7% the rest of the lineages. According to the sequencing data, the rest of the virus variants remain at very low levels of circulation.

The first omicron records in Extremadura were in early December 2021, in the week from 6 to 12, when it accounted for 5.6% of cases. The percentage increased the following week to 28.8% and the week after that to 50.8%, displacing delta as the dominant variant in the region. In the first two weeks of 2022, it registered a presence of 94% and 97.8%.

Finally, in the third week of the year, the lineage of the ómicron variant was already behind 100% of covid cases: 99.2% of BA.1 and the rest, of B.2. Before the arrival of ómicron, the Indian variant was predominant in the Extremadura region from week 25, which corresponds to the end of June, displacing alpha (British) as the majority at that time.
