The UK’s failure to do more to stop the spread of covid early in the pandemic was “one of the biggest public health failures in history,” according to a new report from the British Parliament.

The government’s approach, backed by its scientists, was to try to achieve herd immunity through infection, the document says.

This caused a delay in the introduction of the first confinement, which it cost thousands of lives.

Parliamentarians describe the pandemic, which has so far claimed more than 150,000 lives in the UK and nearly 5 million worldwide, the “greatest peacetime challenge” in a century.
