Europe seems doomed to the third wave of Covid-19. the rise of mobility for the holidays and the emergence of a more contagious variant of the virus in the United Kingdom they have caused an exponential growth in infections and deaths in recent days in much of the continent. Germany and the United Kingdom reported chilling figures yesterday. More than 1,000 deaths in a single day, while Portugal for the first time exceeded 10,000 infections in the last 24 hours.
All the alarms went off in Portugal after beating this Wednesday his own record of new infections. The authorities feared worrisome figures and the forecasts were fulfilled. Given the bad figures, the General Directorate of Health was forced to ask the Lisbon hospital network to cease all non-essential activity to focus on the care of coronavirus patients.
The statistics were made public in the Portuguese country just when the Assembly of the Republic gave the green light to an extension of the state of alarm until January 15. “It was clear that the tolerance of Christmas was going to have a cost, and we are already beginning to pay for it,” said Ricardo Mexia, president of the National Association of Public Health Doctors.
The picture is even worse in the UK. In the last 24 hours, the country registered 1,041 new deaths from Covid-19, after exceeding a thousand daily deaths from the virus for the first time since last April. The British Ministry of Health also reported another record of infections, when 62,322 new infected were reported, which represents the highest daily number of positives since the start of the pandemic.
Given the gravity of the situation, the British “premier”, Boris Johnson, asked Parliament for authorization to extend national confinement until March 31 if necessary.
Germany is experiencing a similar situation. One day after Chancellor Angela Merkel expanded until the end of the month the closing of schools and restaurants, the number of deaths from Covid rose again. Yesterday the health authorities notified 21,237 new infections and 1,109 deaths in a single day.
Merkel, and the 16 leaders of the federal states agreed Tuesday to adopt new restrictions on public life, while extending the currenlock downwn until January 31. The new measures include restrictions on the movement of residents in areas with high infection rates within a 15 kilometer radius of your home, while new limitations have been imposed on private meetings. The closure of schools and nurseries will also last until the end of January.
