CSD postpones Sevilla-Barça, set for Saturday 11

  • “It is a definitive resolution”, maintains the CSD, that takes part in the conflict of the South American internationals

  • The affected teams and Villarreal, who will not play against Alavés either, could not play on Sunday because they have Champions on Tuesday

The Higher Sports Council (CSD) announced the cancellation of the match Seville-Barça, which was to be played on Saturday the 11th at the Sánchez Pizjuán (9:00 p.m.). The body granted the precautionary measure requested by the Professional Football League (LNFP) and approved the postponement of the match, as well as the Villarreal-Alavés (6.30 pm). The federation, which demanded that the match be contested, can present its allegations.

“In use of the powers that I have legally conferred, I resolve to grant the precautionary measure requested by Javier Tebas Medrano López, in the name and on behalf of the LNFP, consisting of granting the requested postponement,” explains the CSD in the note, signed by its president , Jose Manuel Franco, that alleged the “immediacy” of the parties.

Champions on Tuesday

They are the first matches postponed as a result of the conflict that arose after FIFA had extended the time of stay of the players with their national teams to face the qualifying days for the World Cup in Qatar-2022. Based on this measure, the South American footballers arrived in Europe on Friday, just 24 hours before the day. Sevilla was affected with three players (the Argentines Montiel, Acuña and Papuan Gomez) and Barça suffered the late reinstatement of the Uruguayan Ronald Araujo. The matches cannot be postponed to Sunday because Barça, Sevilla and Villarreal have Champions League commitments on Tuesday.

“This resolution is final and against it it is possible to file a contentious-administrative appeal before the courts,” stated the note, which agreed with Thebes against the federation, with which it is confronted.

The League requested on August 29 the postponement of the two games and a change of schedules for the rest of the day. The Competition Committee, dependent on the federation, refused. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) had already rejected the League’s precautionary measure against FIFA of extend the lease time of the South American internationals, but the CSD has given him the reason by postponing the match.

The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) expressed its satisfaction with the ruling. “We are pleased with the decision taken. Protecting the health of footballers is essential for the good performance of their profession,” referring to the fact that the affected players would arrive on Friday, the day before the game, after having played three encounters in 10 days with their countries.

Franco argues in his resolution, likewise, that the measures «first respect the health of the players, which is essential; secondly, the time frame that the affected clubs need to do all the necessary programming for the preparation of a match next Saturday and finally the period of allegations available to the Spanish Federation »to appeal.
