The Generalitat Valenciana announced this summer, as a priority action, the doubling of 14 of the 26 km of CV-95, regional road that connects Orihuela with Torrevieja, between Bigastro and San Miguel de Salinas.

Nevertheless, “it is not the flow and safety of traffic that is a priority in this action “, because this section is the one with” less intensity of traffic “, affirm the organizations Segura Transparente, Amigos de Sierra Escalona, Amigos de los Humedales del Sur de Alicante and the San Miguel de Salinas Neighborhood Association.” points of greater congestion are not even touched, “they add.

According to the road gauges, the highest traffic density is located in the section between Bigastro and Orihuela, which connects the towns on the right bank of the Segura with the regional capital, and, above all, in the access section to Torrevieja from the intersection of the AP-7 with the CV-95.

In this sense, they propose as an alternative “the rescue of the toll section of the AP-7 in the Vega Baja or the establishment of public transport platforms “.

By contrast, the measure adopted by the Generalitat, in the opinion of these entities, “is only understandable since a transfer of the Valencian government to the pressure of influential lobbies.”

Specifically, they argue, it responds to a demand from the “influential sector of the agro-real estate entrepreneurs that operates and has interests in the area. “In other words,” behind the unfolding of CV-95 lies the déjà vu of real estate developmentalism and the freight transport needs of industrial agriculture, an obsolete and unsustainable growth model that does not we can afford it without betraying future generations. ”

In this sense, they recall that “the landscape and the economy of the region have been transformed, as never in recent decades, by a voracious real estate sector and industrial agriculture oriented to the monoculture of citrus fruits that have depleted and polluted basic resources for life, such as water and soil, at the same time that they seek to condemn to the extinction the traditional trade and agrarian structure and trades such as indigenous agriculture and livestock ” .

In addition, the environment of two important protected areas of the region between which the CV-95 runs, Sierra Escalona and the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja, has been “especially affected by this intense process of transformation.”

Action and mobility plans

It is “irrational and inexplicable”, they state, that, while two supra-municipal plans for spatial planning and mobility in the region, such as the Vega Baja Territorial Action Plan (PAT) or the Regional Mobility Plan, are broken of this comprehensive planning framework, the announced splitting of CV-95.

These organizations, which have actively participated in the Vega Baja Renhace Plan and the PAT, have the feeling that “some of the contributions made, specifically on CV-95, fall on deaf ears, that the speeches of the Valencian government do not marry practice and that powerful vested interests prevail over the design of a sustainable future and resilient to climate change “.

Finally, they insist that the growth pattern has shown a cyclical fragility due to the punctures of successive agro-real estate bubbles, without forgetting that it demands “a high and insatiable consumption of soil and water” and mobility is reduced exclusively in unlimited use. of the private car and in the transport of goods by road over long distances.

For this reason, they conclude, “in no case is it sustainable to put more cars on the roads, which is what the obsolete, and already failed in the past, doubling of the CV-95 intends,” but rather “remove cars from the roads. promoting sustainable modes of transport through specific platforms: public transport, bicycle and personal mobility vehicles “.
