We are in August, pure summer, the time of tomatoes, aubergines, zucchini, cucumbers, beans, watermelons, melons and tacky beach towels. With all of them – except for the towels, of course – we can prepare recipes as tasty as the ones we propose in this new edition of our weekly menu. And remember: if you want to find out before anyone else about everything that is going on, you can subscribe to our newsletter and you will receive El Comidista’s weekly menu in your email every Friday. Here you have all the information.
Monday August 2
Yogurt, citrus and spiciness are a fantastic accompaniment to cucumber, while feta adds a salty note to an invention that’s halfway between an appetizer and salad.
NANBAN STYLE CHICKEN
This recipe was born in a small tavern on the Japanese island of Kyushu. The chicken is very juicy after frying, and is accompanied by a horseradish sauce.
HOT NECTARINE AND ICE CREAM BANANA
Do not be confused by the headline: you will not see sex scenes in this recipe, but a very simple and very fresh summer dessert that will satisfy your craving for gastroporno.
Tuesday, August 3
A classic of Cádiz tapas that you can also prepare at home: you only need a good potato, some onion, parsley and a very simple dressing. We can’t get close to the beaches yet, but we’re working on it.
FAKE PUMPKIN PASTA WITH HAZELNUT PESTO
It seems like pasta, it is zucchini: cold ‘zucchini’ with a light pesto that will reconcile you with the mandolin and will make you discover a new way to eat vegetables perfect for the summer.
SEASONAL FRUIT: WATERMELON
There should be a yellowish spot in the area that has been in contact with the soil, and tapping it with your fingers should “feel hollow.”
Wednesday August 4
Not everything is ensaimadas and sobrasadas in Mallorca: when the heat arrives, in the Balearic Islands they are added to the salad as if there were no tomorrow. But not just anybody, no: the trempó.
CRISPY BEANS WITH GREEN BEANS AND GARLIC
Combining legumes, as rich as they are healthy and cheap, with vegetables is a guaranteed triumph. In this recipe we make the beans in the oven and mix them with green beans.
Sometimes the order of the factors alters the product, and the same recipe can give different results. Say goodbye to chance and say hello to science to unravel the mysteries of the hyperchocolate brownie.
Thursday 5th August
Gazpacho is one of the most typical cold soups of the summer. If we add a fruit as from this time as the peach, the result is more summery than a Nivea ball.
SEASONAL FRUIT: MELON
The melon is your friend during the summer and if it smells, is heavy and the base gives a little when squeezed, it is supposed to be good. But it is not an exact science.
Friday August 6
Normally at El Comidista we practice cooking at home, but from time to time – like everyone else – we like to fantasize about being the Roca brothers’ room. This recipe is one of those.
If squid are like over-chewed gum, we have a trick ‘inspired’ by Dani García that will change your life. Plus three toppings that we haven’t copied from anyone.
FIG CAKE AND OLIVE OIL
You can take it at any time of the day, and its combination of ingredients is very Mediterranean – ergo sana – with figs, olive oil and rosemary.
Saturday 7th of August
This recipe is a vegetarian cousin of the fideuà, without shellfish, fish or anything like it, but with very honeyed aubergines and an ‘all i oli’ of seaweed gratin to get an extra gustirrinín.
SEASONAL FRUIT: PEACH
They are soft, tender, juicy and very aromatic when they are at their optimal point. If you get bored of eating them alone you can always click on the link and try some of the recipes.
Sunday August 8
The leftovers of a roast chicken give dishes something more summery than croquettes and cannelloni. In this sandwich they come top with a creamy yogurt, fruit and nuts.
PEARS IN WINE
A classic dessert – not old – to take advantage of those beautiful pears that are now in the greengrocers.
The weekend drink
It is citrusy, it is drunk cold and it makes you a bit happy: nectarine is one of the stars of summer, and in addition to eating it you can also drink it in tasty cocktails like the one we propose here.
