Emma Coronel she accompanied her husband almost every day, Joaquín ‘el Chapo’ Guzmán, during the months that the trial of the former head of the Sinaloa cartel lasted, held in Brooklyn in the winter of 2018 and 2019. This year, the US prosecutor’s office determined that Coronel, 31, also accompanied the narco in his business and charged him with drug trafficking and money laundering.

Now, the wife of the most famous criminal in the world will accompany him in prison life: this Thursday he pleaded guilty in a Washington court and will remain in prison until his sentence is imposed in September.

Colonel was arrested in February at Washington Dulles Airport and has been arrested since. He became a well-known figure in the US for his continued presence in the Chapo trial. Standing on stilettos, wearing flawless costumes and makeup, she spent hours sitting on the defense guest bench in a show of unwavering support for her husband.

Yesterday he changed his appearance completely, with green prison clothing and with a white mask. What is not clear is whether she will change her support for her husband. It is common for convictions to be linked to a negotiation with the authorities to opt for a less onerous sentence. But it doesn’t necessarily include it either.

His lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, assured that Coronel has not promised to cooperate with the authorities but assured that he expected that in September he will receive a sentence of less than ten years.

“She is very happy to leave this behind,” said Lichtman after the hearing, who also led Chapo’s defense at his trial, which ended with a life prison sentence and an additional thirty years for the drug trafficker.

Sinaloa Cartel

The prosecution has accused Coronel of «having helped and being an accomplice»Of the Sinaloa cartel in the trafficking of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamines, said prosecutor Anthony Nardozzi.

El Chapo’s wife, a participant in beauty pageants in Sinaloa who met the drug dealer when she was 17 years old, was instrumental in her husband continuing to run the business when he was in prison in Mexico: he was a transmission belt for his messages, and he collaborated in the famous Altiplano jail break in 2015.

The role of Colonel “allowed Guzmán to regain his leadership in the Sinaloa Cartel and, with this, he strengthened his drug trafficking businesses, ”said Nardozzi.

Lichtman defended at the hearing that Coronel was a “minimal participant” in the cartel business. “It was a very small part of something much bigger.”

El Chapo has been in a maximum security prison – the Colorado Supermax – since 2019. His wife’s future is in doubt until he hears his sentence in September, but what is certain is that he will also spend time behind bars.
